I don't like lumping VR and AR together, because AR is huge while VR is lame. I think the VR advocates like to attach AR to their name to try to get legitamacy. VR will always be niche. AR may very well be the future of gaming. There is a big difference.

Oculus Go is just Gear VR on steroids and not true VR without positional tracking. That’s said it might surely help with mass adoption, which always is a good thing. Also fits quite well after the Ready Player One craze.

the new Oculus prototype they showed today seems much more interesting and exciting.

Still buying it for its media potential and its ease of use and comfort. It's quite the snazzy little device. Can't wait to sit back in bed when I'm fucked over tired and be able to watch netflix in 5.1 virtual surround sound or when I'm out and about. I can see potential in this thing, not the games of course but the media potential is enough to warrent 150 for me, in fact I might even jump on the 200 price if detroit doesn't live up to my expectations.

I can see a lot of people getting into VR because of devices like this. The new oculus and other high end VR suffer the same problem,  a price barrier for the average consumer.

I have an Oculus Rift, and I've dabbled with the Virtual Theater, but I much prefer to watch movies either in an actual theater or on my 55" tv.  I don't think wearing a headset will ever replace that for me.  The gaming applications are very cool though.

i see them converging as one when the tech is available to project items in a room with out the need of a headset.

at the moment i have tried psvr and i liked it.

i have not tried any others due to the high price of gear, and not to mention a complete computer overhaul, which is NOT happening at today's prices so that's is still at least 2 or so years away of even considering a new pc build, so no telling what will be out then.

AR and VR go hand in hand into the mixed realty industry. The same companies who have there hands in VR are in AR and vice versa. They will be one and the same thing down the line with the cameras required for inside out tracking VR headsets will also incorporate AR tech. Don't bring fanboy shit into this, why does every thing have to be a battle ffs, it's not needed, the technologies aren't competing and the generation of tech from one is helping in evolving the other.

Fucking tribalists, having to reduce everything down to a binary state of winner and loser. You bore me.

It's true that on the tech side they go hand in hand.  On the business side they are as different as night and day.  I've seen VR struggle for decades now, while this little AR game, Pokemon Go, comes out of nowhere and becomes major phenomenon.  I mean if you are only interested in purely the tech then you are exactly right.  But if you are interested in where the games are going, then they are going to AR.  The VR people can only fail so much before they go for the much easier money in AR.

Have you even tried VR?

I have quite literally been playing VR for decades now.  I was optimistic about it when I first tried Dactyl Nightmare, and it was also pretty cool when i played the Aladin VR game at Disney Quest.  But also Nintendo's biggest flop was the Virtual Boy.  VR has been around for decades now and has been tried in many ways.  Even at it's best it is extremely costly to develop for, and considering Disney Quest closed down, I doubt all the money they put into VR was really worth it.

Then this AR game, Pokemon Go, comes around and becomes a huge success without hardly even trying.  It is so much easier to make money with AR.  The business reality is that AR games are going to be the focus in the future much more than VR games.

The Virtual Boy had nothing to do with virtual reality. It didn't use feedback from body and head position and movement. The viewpoint was still a tiny rectangle in front of you with no immersion whatsoever. There was no illusion of being in the virtual world, no looking around yourselff... it was just a HMD with a pretty bad stereoscopic effect and lack of different colors, nothing more.

Disney Quest got a constant stream of visitors for almost 18 years despite no reinvestments and totally outdated technology. The fact that they could stay open with that outdated tech is close to a miracle! And even if they finally closed down in 2016, many new VR entertainment centers with much better tech have opened up in the last years and are keeping the torch burning.

Yeah, that game looks great. I remember Node playing this and it looks like it has been enhanced since. Nodes enhanced VR guns, video though is like a generational leap beyond anything else and mentioned in the OP.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX3m8HiL-5c Absolutely crazy how the little details make such a big leap.

Jep, VR offers a complete new way and immersion of experiencing this stuff and I can't wait to see this being fully implemented in games. Pavlov is still early access, but the developer is still working strongly on the game and will do way more enhancements to the game like modifying guns in real time.
