Forums - Gaming - Is it okay to Pirate games?

If you own it already, or it's no longer available for sale (and so the funds wouldn't go to the maker anyway), then it's fine imo

If it's an easily available and reasonably priced game, nope.

If it's Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Saturn, yarr mateys!

It is never okay to pirate.

Purchase the damn game.

Come on, theres a lot of good games out there and not everyone wants to spend their limited funds on them.

I think piracy for the sake of game preservation and in cases where the original developer has stopped selling the game or just has stopped existing and the license is stuck in limbo it is ok to pirate.

It doesn't really make a diffrence to the original license holder if you buy a used copy or pirate the game. That is to say, piracy can actually help spread awareness of a retro system and it's games and help getting the games being sold legitimately again.
I don't think we'd have devices like the NES/SNES mini without the Rasberrry Pi modding scene + emulation. Let alone the resurgance of retro computing, like the renewed interest in the C64, Spectrum and Acorn computers. A lot of the emulation that first leads to interest, let's be honest, boils down to piracy.

I think if you get a chance to support the original license holders, and buy the game, new, from them, you should. I'm always for supporting devs. Pirating games that are being actively sold, or just came out is just scummy.

There's a lot of good cars out there too and not everyone wants to spend their limited funds on them either. Does that justify stealing them? No, it doesn't.

It's digital, you're not stealing anything tangible from anyone. And there's enough good Samaritans out there that are going to buy the games, so you're not really harming developers by pirating so long as most people get squeamish of "stealing" digital products.

It doesn't matter whether it's digital, it's still stealing. And it's actually worse than stealing some other things. PPeople don't need video games, they're a luxury and nobody is entitled to them.

People have a right to take what they can get.

Interesting.  I wonder if you'd feel that way of someone took your identity?

I'm talking about harmless crimes, like jaywalking and piracy.

Just because the said content is not available in a specific region does not mean that it's OK to pirate it either ...

I see this justification quite often when that is not the case according to the Berne Convention so copyright protection DOES apply to foreign works ...

Especially true now that all current consoles are region free, there really is no justification to pirate something just because it's not available for purchase where you live.

Not true, not having the money or wanting to spend it on something else is plenty of justification. There are poor people also.

Jaywalking could result in one getting hit by a car.  Take for instance the homeless woman that got hit by driverless uber car in Arizona.  Sometimes people forget to look both ways...  Piracy can also harm people.  If everybody pirated then no one would make any money.
