I think piracy for the sake of game preservation and in cases where the original developer has stopped selling the game or just has stopped existing and the license is stuck in limbo it is ok to pirate.
It doesn't really make a diffrence to the original license holder if you buy a used copy or pirate the game. That is to say, piracy can actually help spread awareness of a retro system and it's games and help getting the games being sold legitimately again.
I don't think we'd have devices like the NES/SNES mini without the Rasberrry Pi modding scene + emulation. Let alone the resurgance of retro computing, like the renewed interest in the C64, Spectrum and Acorn computers. A lot of the emulation that first leads to interest, let's be honest, boils down to piracy.
I think if you get a chance to support the original license holders, and buy the game, new, from them, you should. I'm always for supporting devs. Pirating games that are being actively sold, or just came out is just scummy.
