As expected, Naughty Dog win this thread.

Overrated is something that is misused all the time because people retrospectively judge games. If you're going to say a game is overrated, you have to do so at the time it released or compare it to the games it was going up against when it DID release.

This is very very true....people who play RDR like 6 years later and then complain have no credibility. The game’s open world was mind blowing back then. These days it’s one game among many which feature a similar open world.

Welcome to 95% of the people that call FF7 "overrated" - people that played it several years after it had come out.

All games on the Atari VCS. The machine is yet to be released. They want YOUR money. The thing won't get released until they've got your money (known as preorders). And then a whole slew of shitty games, both past and present, will rain down quite literally from the heavens, for your shitty benefit.

You can't say you weren't warned

I'm sure more than 5% of the people that call it overrated say that because they think it gets too much attention and that 6, 8 or 9 were better games and are more deserving of praise, rather than because they didn't play it for years. I'm one of those people by the way. Both 8 and 9 are in my top 3 games of all time while FF7 barely makes the list.

Edit: Also I find it hilarious that people are falsely claiming that others are using words wrong or even aren't rating things by the "correct" arbitrary metric just because they're upset that not everyone thinks the game they like is the best thing since sliced bread

Well I'm not one of those people. I played FF7, 8, & 9 when they came out. 7 isn't overrated at all. FF8 was trash because it didn't know where it was going. FF9 had a better ending than FF7, and it's one of my favorite - but it's not better than 7 from a critical standpoint. (It's Hironabu's favorite though, so that says something)

But if and when I say a video game is overrated or not, they're video games I played within a 2 years of release - not 8 or so years...that's just being dishonest to your own credibility of having a valid opinion on the subject.

These threads always end up hurting peoples feelings when they’re made. Last time I’m not sure what I said, but I really don’t care for Bethesda.

Wait, what? I played Final Fantasy VII near launch, and while I loved it I always felt it was a little overrated. It did some cool shit with graphics and FMVs and stuff, but beyond that it wasn't anything special.

And keep in mind, Final Fantasy VII is one of my top ten favorite games of all time, I just acknowledge that a decent chunk of my love for that game comes from nostalgia. It's still a great game, but not one of the best.

For me, Final Fantasy VII has the best plot and story that has ever graced the video game entertainment medium.

HOWEVER

Story is a matter of taste, so that merit is a gray area. But Final Fantasy VII can be graded by other awesome aspects such as:

- Breathtaking pre-rendered backgrounds (AT THE TIME)

- Record breaking number of tracks for a game (by a large margin) and many of them being undisputed classics

- First game (ever) to implement FMV/CG cutscenes into the game play

And its production cost was $85 Million (adjusted for inflation) which was unheard of back in 1997. And that's not accounting its advertising costs with Pepsi. Not really a validation, but it puts FF7's relevance in perspective.

Uncharted 2 and 3.

But not 1 and 4?

Haven't played 4 yet and 1 isn't overrated (it doesn't get the huge praise 2 and 3 get)

I played Red Dead Redemption in 2011, started playing about a year after the game's release, and I never found it to be in any way special. It's good no question, but the massive amount of praise it received back then just made no sense to me. It's a solid 8/10, a game I enjoyed playing while it lasted, but will most likely never go back to play again.

Final Fantasy 7.
