Welcome to 95% of the people that call FF7 "overrated" - people that played it several years after it had come out.

Wait, what? I played Final Fantasy VII near launch, and while I loved it I always felt it was a little overrated. It did some cool shit with graphics and FMVs and stuff, but beyond that it wasn't anything special.

And keep in mind, Final Fantasy VII is one of my top ten favorite games of all time, I just acknowledge that a decent chunk of my love for that game comes from nostalgia. It's still a great game, but not one of the best.

For me, Final Fantasy VII has the best plot and story that has ever graced the video game entertainment medium.

HOWEVER

Story is a matter of taste, so that merit is a gray area. But Final Fantasy VII can be graded by other awesome aspects such as:

- Breathtaking pre-rendered backgrounds (AT THE TIME)

- Record breaking number of tracks for a game (by a large margin) and many of them being undisputed classics

- First game (ever) to implement FMV/CG cutscenes into the game play

And its production cost was $85 Million (adjusted for inflation) which was unheard of back in 1997. And that's not accounting its advertising costs with Pepsi. Not really a validation, but it puts FF7's relevance in perspective.
