At the risk of sounding like a snob I’ll say most games are overrated, because how crazy hype culture and fanboy outrage is in this industry. I pity the poor soul that dares say something bad about Zelda or The Last of Us. (Both games that I like btw)

On a personal level, I couldn’t get into the Witcher 3. The main draw seems to be the high quality of its sidequests, but I tend to focus on the main quest when playing games and I found it to be pretty average. Nothing spectacular. The combat felt like a poor man’s Bloodborne and I’ll never understand the need of weight limit in a game that wants you to go out and explore.

Honestly that is what I was thinking.  Social media internet etc hypes games so much.

When I had high expectations of games base on the hype i used to get upset when they weren't what I hoped.

Then when I stopped caring about what I expected and what others thought of the game I enjoyed more random games. Kind of like the old days were you had no access to internet and everyone's opinions and you went out on a limb and bought a game that got your attention.

At the end it all comes down to personal taste,

Yeah, I also started avoiding most trailers and I feel like I'm having a much better time with the games as a result, especially when it's from a series I love and that I'll buy regardless of the quality because I need to see it for myself. Going into BotW mostly blind really leaves an impression.

I'm gonna add a few more in addition to FF VII, which is probably my top pick.

Diddy Kong Racing

Viva Pinata

Virtua Fighter 2 ( any platform )

That'll do.

I didn't know any of those except FFVII were highly regarded.

If VF2 is generally held up as the best of the series or something then I would say it's overrated too. I do like the game (Saturn version) but VF4-5 have it beaten very, very easily. I like the VF series more than any other fighting games (excluding Smash Bros) but VF2 is worse than most Tekken games, every Soul Calibur game, most DOA games, a few Bloody Roar games, Fighter's Megamix (Saturn) and it's on par with Fighting Vipers I'd say. It's probably near the lower end of fighting games I actually enjoy even though it's probably the most nostalgic for me. I will say that it was the best fighting game at the time of it's Saturn release in 1995. It beats the hell out of Rise of the Robots for sure.

Oh Powerstone might be overrated....if people still care about that game, it was good, but I never liked it as much as it seemed everyone else did.

As for Diddy Kong Racing, its good but not as good as most Mario Kart games, CTR, Mickey's Speedway (N64, Rareware) those two Sega All Stars racing games (PS3/360 versions), probably a few other kart games I can't remember right now. It's better than Jak X though, I'll give it that. Again, if it's widely rated above those games, I would call it overrated but I can't say I've heard it getting that much praise.

Zelda is 'not' an RPG franchise. I'm so tired of uninformed gamers lumping Zelda into the RPG genre. It's Action/Adventure. Just because it has a Fantasy setting doesn't automatically mean it's an RPG. God damn... I thought we were past this.

Knock that "uninformed" shit out, please. If you disagree with someone, argue against their points and don't mischaracterize their positions.

Yeah, except gaining xp and leveling up... which is like the main thing you do in almost any rpg.

Well you get higher max health and better gear as you progress. Again, they're so close to the line....

Saints row 4 gives you more and better powers and you can extend your heatlh, and also has an xp system. GTA gives you better weapons as you progress.

Rise of the tomb raider gives you better gear as you progress, and upgrades so you're better in battle, along with an xp system.  WatchDogs 2 gives you better hacking gear as you progress.

None of these are rpg's.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

I think it's safe to say all the games I mentioned are at least fairly well regarded by a majority of fans and critics. Also, in regards to Power Stone: Agreed! I found it quite shallow. Didn't hate it, but didn't very like much.

Wow, I'm surprised you didn't put FFIX on your list.

In Order:

Horizon Zero Dawn, All Assassin's Creed (except black flag), Tomb Raider (2013 and Rise), Red Dead Redemption, Spyro Franchise and Banjoo franchise.

I forgot Tomb Raider 2013.... Didn't play Rise, but found 2013 very bad, felt like a missed attempt at doing an Uncharted-like game. Never understood the praise for that game.

It's always weird to me how the Zelda games get held up as RPGs or put to the scrutiny of RPGs. The original Zelda game wasn't even close to an RPG, and the only reason people associate Zelda with RPGs is because as time progressed the only games with the production values of Zelda games that had a similar setting were RPGs. Even that is a bad comparison though, because Zelda started the idea of having an action game in 3D with a lock on mechanic in Ocarina of Time, it wasn't copying RPGs it was doing something original. Basically the only reason people associate Zelda with RPGs, is because similar adventure games just regressed to the point of obscurity. If there were more games like Zelda, people wouldn't grasp at straws for the term "RPG".

I did say pseudo rpg, right? Series evolve over time or die out. The majority of the zelda games are much closer to being rpgs than they are to the original games or being a part of the plain ol' action genre. It's not much of a stretch to say they are rpgs. GOW is getting the rpg makeover. I'm not gonna call it a hack and slash.

I know you said pseudo rpg, i'm explaining why critiquing Zelda as an RPG doesn't make sense. You say that it's closer to an RPG than an action game but ... there's a term called ... "Action/Adventure". Zelda is an action adventure game.

In general, people don't use the term RPG properly anyways. Video games have been moving closer to """""RPGs""""" since Battlefield 2 made progression systems popular in shooters. In actuality, what most people stereotype as what makes an RPG an RPG isn't really ... well ... what makes an RPG an RPG. But at least those people don't go around critiquing a franchise because they don't know genre labels ;)

No harm no foul really though. If you don't like Zelda that's fine.
