I am huge fan of Switch, but I feel this date is arbitrary in an objective sense. It would be nice to see how all the consoles compare exactly 12 months after launch. That seems like the most objective date to me.

How is the end of a fiscal quarter arbitrary? Its not.

We cant compare exactly 12 months from launch because Sony/Nintendo do not report that way, they report numbers at the end of each fiscal quarter.

You have a fair point.  But on the other hand, the easiest time to declare a console in "the lead" is right after December.  If they are still the fastest selling console in a few months after the Wii and PS4 get an extra holiday season, then that would really be something.  It would be "the lead" in a more permanent sense.

Well we can look at things a few different ways

Launches aligned (4 fiscal quarters)

Wii-13.17m

PS4-13.50m

NSW-14.86m

Calender year

Wii 2007-16.94m

PS4 2014-15.40m

NSW 2017-14.86m

First full fiscal year (Apr-March)

Wii-18.61m

PS4-14.80m

NSW-15.00m (forcast)

Basically they are all right there next to each other and you can look at it different ways to get slightly different results.

hmm, launches aligned though wouldn't that put it behind PS2 still? The PS2 is always screwed over by launching 7/8 months (NA and EU respectively) early in Japan.

Seems kind of strange to say Switch is fastest selling worldwide, when PS2 is (probably) fastest selling in each individual region.

Ssssssshhhhhhhh let him eat his cherries in peace.

That's because PS4 and Wii had two holiday seasons after ~13 months.

Don't you like that? To try and make the Swtich not be as big a success they add 1 month. Instead of looking at a year of data, they want 13 so that they get an extra huge holiday boost.

Comparisons should only be made for entire years, or comparing months themselves. You know November vs. November.

I imagine we will be seeing some "First 26 months" or something come next year as well so that they can grab some extra holiday numbers.

it's a pretty valid thing to consider, you can't just discount the difference in time and period both the consoles were released when analysing the sales of the console, you're doing the exact thing which annoys you, if you don't there's no point in talking about sales if you're going to half arse it.

Some caveats.

1) The Switch was launched in early March and thus is only about 11 months old. The Wii, PS4, and PS2 had yet to have a full post-launch holiday season after 11 months.

2) The Switch had a simultaneous global launch. The PS4 wasn't released in Japan until Feb. 2014. The PS2 wasn't released in the West until it had been out in Japan for like seven months.

Looking at it on a region by region basis and using more accurate comparisons than simple launch-aligned LTD numbers, it becomes clear that the Switch, though it is doing very well, is most certainly not the fastest-selling system ever.

Companies are launching with holidays in mind during fall launches. Its not like Switch didn't get its stock problems. It just got it during the entire year instead of christmas which still had some btw.

Also, PS4 fell under 10k in japan pretty quickly, it wouldn't make much difference. Switch still has market to be launched into and got some success in SK and taiwan only in December.

It did what I always thought most consoles should. Why always launch during the holidays? Get your launch bump out of the way then let the holiday bump hit just as it slows down

No its on you for not understanding a simple concept that had existed since Nintendo started sharing numbers 20+ years ago.

For Nintendo, shipments to retailers are sales. They report sales to retailers.

For sales trackers like NPD, Media Create, Vgchartz a sale is when a consumer purchases a unit from a retailer.

Woah dude, VGPolyglot is saying those numbers are shipped. o.o

Yeah we arent arguing about what shipped numbers are, Nintendo themselves made it abit odd by saying about the 9 months ending 31st December. So i thought it was 12million something shipped plus the 2 million Sold through ( at launch). But yeah i was wrong, it is just the shipped numbers of three quarters plus the last fiscal.

It's breaking a lot of launch records, but its LT is what matters now

Amazing news! People really underestimate the Switch. What a comeback!

Pocky Lover Boy!

It's good news but ridiculous at the same time. Why? Because the amount of potential consumers have grown exponentially since the NES. That's why. The only way to judge a consoles dominance is to compare it against its competition in the era it launched.
