Forums - Gaming - More Resident Evil 5 racism claims

But I still think he's needlessly bringing race into the equation...not to mention I'm one of those people that don't care about slavery, that's in the past.

Shame on you. You're supposed to feel guilty for crimes committed by your father's father's father's father's father.

Of course, if your family never owned slaves, then you should just default to feeling guilty for being white.

I think this guy is upset about the scenes with the villagers before they turn into zombies. Of course I didn't rtfa, lol. Shoulda, but didn't.

Frankly, the racism is obviously not intentional, and be definition, doesn't the act of racism have to be intentional. Otherwise, it ceases to be racism and becomes an accident or mistake that offended, but wasn't intended to be racist.

Honestly though, I'm sick of hearing about racism, and I would never discuss racism outside of an internet forum where I'm anonymous, because if I said the wrong thing, then I would offend someone, and honestly, at this point in America, nobody knows what the wrong thing is. I certainly don't. Best to just avoid the issue.

I know this, however. If this some how screws with the Resident Evil series in a negative way, or affects the game, I will be pissed, and I gurantee you'll hear everything I have to say about racism, RE5, and how being overly sensative to everything, sucks, and makes people hate you not for the color of your skin, but for the inflection of whine if your annoying and unwelcome voice.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

We'll be closer to the world in which I want to live when a video game company can make a game like this, and people won't even really take notice of the color of skin involved.

Some people look at this game and just see zombies -- they're black, which is appropriate to the location in which the game is set.

Other people look at the game and see black people being shot. They find it inappropriate because they think it sends a wrong message, or could be found offensive.

The first group of people bring us closer to the world I want, and the second group take us further away. I side with group #1.

Heh, I wonder what Yahtzee would have to say about this. He had a couple of things to say about Uncharted's white hero's and multi-racial enemies.

I think that had more to do with the fact that none of the villians were white until the last couple... yet every other race was covered.

Being set in an area predominantly full of black people is likely going to make the opponents predominantly black. One could argue that they could of used a black main character since it's not like RE games don't introduce new main characters all the time.

I'm assuming that's where the main problem lies anyway. Not that black people are being killed, but that it's a white guy killing black people. A white american no less.

It'd be like if you had a game... and there was a black guy, and his favorite food was chicekn or something. Is that racist? No. But because of stereotypes a lot of people will be offended... so why bother? How hard is it to change chicken to popcorn or turkey or something.

Of course, people should be alowed to make blatantly racist games as well. People could make a holocaust simulator where hitler goes running around exterminating jews as much as a care... at the end of the day the free market will decide what's acceptable as games like that won't sell.

A game where a bunch of Japanese guys started killing Chinese people likely wouldn't go over well with the Chinese audience either.

Oh he's not out of line...he addresses various things like "RE4 was killing Spaniards, why no outcry there?" He says because of the history that black people have in America, etc.

But I still think he's needlessly bringing race into the equation...not to mention I'm one of those people that don't care about slavery, that's in the past. And while some things might not work out evenly between races due to racism somewhere along the line, I don't see how bringing up slavery to people who have been free their whole lives is going to help.

I bet some news network will indeed bring up RE5 when it comes out and call it racist. And they'll have a panel of "experts" discuss it and unanimously call it racist. And they'll have some videogame-savvy person on the show and totally ignore what he has to say. And then we go on with our lives.

That is not he impression I got. I got the impression that he was basically saying why would Capcom set themselves up for all the scrutiny that will ensue. The mainstream media will label Capcom a racist company without cause or merit. I mean one only has to look at the Mass Effect controversy to see what will happen with RE5, except the RE5 controversy will most likely be bigger because it involves perceived racism.

Naughty Dog based the game off of Somali Pirates.

I think if they made the pirates white it would have been more racist because, well, what white pirates do you hear about in the news aside from working at Long John Silver? Also, a great chunk of the game takes place in Asia, so....

Not too many colored protaganists, nor too many colored antagonists in video games.

Well then he's among the first to start this labeling against Capcom...I'm sure the media will be all over it...but since when did the media report correctly anyway?

Gamers tended to just pass off the remarks about Mass Effect being a "sex simulator" and whatnot...but when RE5 gets called racist, suddenly everyone's getting overly cautious and concerned.  I just don't see it as a big issue other than what the media will make of it.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Your kidding right?  There are plenty of white pirates.  Piracy is something that all nations like to get in on.

Also... basing something on the opposite of a stereotype isn't racism.

Like I said, what white pirates do you hear about in the news?

The latest news almost always pertains to Somali pirates, especially now with that French yacht incident.
