Forums - Gaming - How do the visuals on the Nintendo Switch compare to those of the Xbox 360 & PS3?

The Nintendo Switch hardware is...

A big leap over 7th gen 71 40.11%

A minor leap over 7th gen 72 40.68%

About the same as 7th gen 24 13.56%

Actually WORSE than last gen 10 5.65%

Total:177

I can't believe people here really believe that PS3 is better than Switch. I mean... I just can't even argue with someone like this

The fact we're even having this discussion is quite silly frankly. It's like saying "3DS has better graphics than Vita because I haven't seen anything on Vita that looks better than RE Revelations".

Way back when I remember people thinking PSP was as powerful as PS2 and GBA wasn't as powerful as SNES or Genesis and my favorite PSVita is as powerful as PS3 (aside from having more RAM)

I think these people who argue this crap should open up Google Chrome and download more RAM.

I think the switch could handle gta 5 so I'd say it's the same or slightly worse than ps3/360.

I only got odyssey and xenoblade 2 for the switch and both these games aren't better looking than the last of us or uncharted 3.

There is no reason to think that GTAV would work slightly worse on Switch compared to PS3/360 version of game when evre multiplatform game until now works at higher resolution on Switch compared to PS3 and in most cases with batter frame rate and better visuals. For instance Skyrim on Switch game works at 900p with almost locked FPS and better visuals compared to 720p and bad frame rate and worse visuals on PS3/360, onother example is Fifa 18 where on Switch works at 1080p with noticibly better visuals compared to 720p and worse visuals on PS3/360.

TLoU and Uncharted 3 are both linear games while Xenoblade 2 has huge open world wild wild life and game has very modern and advanced effects, while Mario Odyssey is also more open world game and game runs at 900p/60fps compared to 720p/30fps in case of TLoU and Uncharted 3 both linear games.

So we are talking about a console not even out a year. Let's revisit this end of 2018 Q1 2019 to see how the hardware visually stands up.

That being said Bowser's Kingdom in Mario looks gorgeous.

Somewhat better and definitely better performing, but not a noticeable leap in quality. That would require double the power it has right now.

The basic problem is defining what a big leap is. I know people that still think, PS4 and Xbox One are a minor leap over PS3 and X360.

With every game that is comparable and with ports i'd say there is a real leap for Switch. Ports of last gen games running with better effects and/or up to twice the resolution. At least in docked mode. The big question is, if that's a big leap. I'd say no. It's a minor one.

At the same time we see something like Doom running on Switch. Stuff that didn't work on last gen consoles anymore. And that is quite a few steps ahead of PS360.

Thats also not hole picture, comparing raw numbers of tech/architecture from different decades don't make too much sense. :)

Of course. Considering differences in architectures of those two systems (not to mention PS3),  the exact comparison is pretty much impossible. But even in raw numbers, the picture is very clear. Switch isn't just a marginally better system, but also isn't a giant leap in performance, like PS4 for example. 7th gen ports will run and look better than on X360, period. That's why, from all four answers  "A minor leap..." in my opinion, is the most appropriate answer.

There shouldn't still be any doubts that Switch is more powerful than PS3 when docked. Look at Dark Souls: Remastered. Runs at 1080p on Switch docked and 720p on PS3 not to mention we don't know other graphical improvements that the Switch docked might have over the PS3 version. PS3 Dark Souls doesn't even run at 30fps at times in New Londo and Blighttown which the Switch should handle easily.

The real comparison is between PS3 and the Switch undocked and Wii U where the winner isn't quite as clear. No amount of hyperbole from either side counts, such as people saying Zelda BOTW can't run on PS3 because we don't really know.
