Forums - Sales - Is the 360 in trouble?

I believe 360 will reach 25 milion and PS3 20

Around the Network

so basicly if microsoft doesnt lose any money on the x360 its doing good.
if the ps3 sell less than the ps2 sony its doing bad.
can someone explain the logic in this?
outselling the ps2 is almost impossible with this competition.
even the Wii wont make it, it wont even get close.

ms arnt profiting from the 360. all that cash is going towards the RROD.

Microsoft set aside the RRoD costs almost a year ago. It's a sunk cost. Right now, they're making money and that's what matters.

Lol that's just an accounting game and most investors aren't stupid...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Personally I feel that every single copy of GTA4 sold for 360 is an absolute victory for Microsoft. It's a slap in the face for Sony. It also prevents Sony from an extreme boost in console sales. I think without a 360 GTA4 version PS3 could have seen at least 2 million extra consoles sold.

I think it's way too dramatic to assume that the 360 could be dead by Jan 2009. Even when hardware sales decline dramatically (there's no sign to that, currently the track higher than last year) the software sales are heroic.

Like I said above, Microsoft doesn't need to beat the PS3 to be successful.

Oh, I agree completely. But it depends how things play out - and also on the definition of "dead".

Hate to drag the PSP into this, but in many respects I believe it is dead - on life support from Sony. If Sony take away their resources from software dev, the handheld will die off pretty quickly (still be around for years though - but by the same token the XBOX is still "around").

...

Worst situation for MS:  GTA sells really well on 360 at launch, as it does on PS3. However very little hardware boost to 360 (existing owners buying it), whereas huge PS3 boost. Over time (say 3 months), weekly 360 sales for GTA drop faster on the 360 than they do on the PS3 - to the point where the PS3 GTA outsells it in the US.

360 sales drop to close to pre-GTA levels. PS3 sales stay at elevated levels, and significantly higher than weekly sales of 360 in US.

Final straw would then be: MS drop price of 360 in US. Hardware sales spike, then fall off to almost pre-price cut levels. PS3 sales stay above 360 levels post price cut.

Then Sony drops PS3 prices pre-Xmas, sales skyrocket, a couple of PS3 exclusives do well (HOME, LBP?), CoD5 PS3 sales match 360 sales. PS3 easily beats 360  over Xmas period (in US). PS3 now easily outselling 360 in every territory.

Game over.

(not saying this will happen - but if things don't pan out post-GTA for the 360, this is the danger MS faces. Just like BluRay v HD-DVD - when the end comes, it could come pretty quickly. MS will not throw in the towel, but unless they can pull out a killer-app - something they have always struggled at - public perception will be that its game over).

I don't think MS ever expected to become profitable with the 360 anyway , the best they can hope is that they break even and use the 720 to achieve 1st place with a proven brand name and more experience in the industry.

I, honestly, don't think that has a chance in hell of happening, and I honestly believe Microsoft knows it.

If their goal is to be number one, they should get out now. It's gonna be a hard road to hoe.

If their goal is simply to be profitable, then the 720 should be where they set their sites.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

microsoft have released their big titles and lost momentum by the end of 07.
gta4 will give a boost, ng2 ,bk3 and f2 will only give very small boosts.
nintendo will be out of its AAA titles this summer and will lose some of their momentum but when the ps3 comes on the wii price range it will lose almost all its momentum and the ps3 will start dominating like the ps2.
ps2 will sell better LTD obviously because of the hard competition the ps3 had in its early days + bad press.

I wouldn't bring the Wii into this - it doesn't even come into the equation.

The PS3 will never get close to catching the Wii (in weekly sales) - until Ninty decide to bring in something else. I think its more concerning for Sony that consumers are still choosing the PS2 over the PS3.

Its still impossible to know just how strong the Wii is, as supply still doesn't match demand. And WiiFit, MK, Brawl (Europe) won't help this equation - neither will Ninty launching in new countries.

Its ridiculous (but possible) that the Wii won't even get a price cut until Xmas '09, or 2010. That would make it 4 or 5 Xmas's without a price cut. It may be as late as 2012 before Ninty actually stop supporting it (unless they bring in a new model, and overlap the hardware - which is possible).

On the topic of GTA4, the countdown is at 17 days. If they were to drop the price (in america) this month it should leak in the following days. If by wednesday next week we haven't heard anything you guys can pretty much scrap the idea.

You nailed it the second time.  Corporations care about one number, and one number only, the bottom line.  The only people who care about sales totals and stuff are gamers.  Sure, they probably discuss how their sales are going at meetings, but only as a barometer to measure how much revenue they're taking in.  In the end, the survival of Microsoft's games division doesn't have anything to do with the success of Sony or Nintendo.  We saw last quarter that it is possible for all three companies to profit in the industry, so not achieving first place isn't as big a deal as fanboys make it seem.

Dont get me wrong , but PS3 lucks a lot of hardcore gamers...
