Just watched Thor, and here are my thoughts.  As always, there are plenty of spoilers below, so don't read if you haven't seen the movie yet.

Plusses:

Loki is a very interesting villain, and the story arc between him, Thor and Odin is the most interesting part of the movie.

The Destroyer is kinda badass.

The opening scene showing Asgard is extremely well done.  It looks both beautiful and alien at the same time.

This movie avoided doing anything that outright annoyed me a lot unlike say, Hulk or Iron Man 2.

Minuses:

I was actually a little irritated by SHIELD.  They are ok, but they kind of came across as the unintentional villains in the middle while insisting they were the good guys.  This wasn't terrible, but not as interesting as Loki.

This movie doesn't do anything exceptionally well.  Nothing really stood out.  The movie is always good but never great.  Loki and the overall plot on Asgard is more interesting than the Earth plot.  However, Thor himself is more interesting when on Earth.  Seeing Thor powerless and all that entails is cool, but it doesn't really go anywhere exciting.  On the other hand, Asgard is kind of too serious to be interesting overall except for Loki.

Overall, the movie Thor avoided serious flaws and I enjoyed watching it, but it didn't really have any huge standout parts that stayed with me like a great film would have.

6/10

SHIELD in the MCU is an odd entity. The acronym was changed, the premised was different. What was once a International Organisation, was seemingly now a US programme which 'protects' the world. Not quite how it should be.

They act in MCU as a busy bodies, getting involved in things in reality they shouldn't. No longer a secret 'Espionage' division, more of a Registration Act than anything. Keeping tabs on super humans and if anything suppressing them. Only person who acts as the original concept is Fury and he wasn't even the highest ranking one there.

Of course much of my bitterness comes from the idea that Shield series started going on about there not being psychics in the world when 616 Shield has long had a Psy-Division, Mentallo is their product. And then Inhumans arriving, and they tried to force and elitist royal society as having the same problems as mutants...

Hmm, pie.

I have Thor on hold at the library. Plan to pick it up tomorrow and watch on Saturday.

I'm really going to need a shot of The Avengers after this stretch ;)

I'm being really generous with this rating as I admire the dialogue and character interactions that the entire series provides. This one is just boring. I don't even have anything to say besides "Its boring". I'll watch it again tomorrow and provide extended thoughts.

Eh, Thor is at least dumb fun, and Cap is decent. I'd say the worst is behind us already.

Very much agreed.  When Avengers came out, I felt Marvel made about half good movies and half meh movies.  Now I see that they a freak string of bad ones before having an unprecedented long streak of really good ones.  Maybe these first few are just them finding their legs.

First time I stumble unto this thread. Interesting idea, I might join for a few movies. I'm not going to rewatch Iron Man 2 though, once was enough.

You are welcome!

I wonder how I'll feel about Thor as I rewatch it. I had actually watched Avengers before I ever saw Thor, because I simply had no interest in the character at the time, but seeing Chris Hemsworth in the role - and his chemistry with the rest of the cast - I thought ok I'll check out his solo flick. It was a bit of a mixed bag as I recall.

The action at the start was quite fun, and really brought home how powerful Thor is. Even more so than Avengers did, I'd say. Chris Hemsworth also had great chemistry with the supporting cast once again, and Tom Hiddleston equally is just as good as he was in Avengers. The main issue for me was really the plot, and it ran into problems quite quickly in the movie. We're shown at the start that it took Odin a massive army, and war effort to overcome the Frost Giants (which he also lost an eye to), but then 10 minutes or so later we see Thor single handedly wreck all their collective remaining asses. Hell in one scene he shatters what seems to be a city sized chunk of land from right out under them with fairly minimal effort. Then Odin shows up and chastises him for endangering the people of Asgard with possible war. I'm like "......what war? This guy could probably genocide their whole race by himself if you let him loose." There is no believable threat here.

Then towards the end of the movie, I remember being really hyped for the fight between Thor and the Destroyer armor, which I knew a bit about from playing the Marvel Ultimate Alliance game back in the day, and that turned out to be like the biggest dud ever. In the Avengers, Fury claimed Thor had levelled that entire town in his fight with that thing, but that isn't even remotely what happened. As I recall, the town came out of it miraculously unscathed, despite Thor summoning a big ass tornado, and he dismantled the Destroyer armor in less than a minute. Then afterwards we were supposed to buy that Loki was somehow a more serious physical threat in the final fight. I mean.....seriously? Nah.....

I also thought that whole bit in the middle of the movie was pretty hilarious, with Shield trying to figure out what this mystical hammer is, closing down the surrounding area, taking all these precautions. Then a giant barbarian of a man waltzes in, beats the brakes off all your men guarding the area, and instead of having Hawkeye take him out before this dude potentially actually does something with this hammer you've been trying to keep away from people cus you don't know wtf is up with this thing, Coulson is just like "meh.....lets see what happens." Really? Lets see what happens? What if Thor is a bad guy, picks up that hammer, and proceeds to expand the crater you're already in? What kind of shit show are you people running over there?

And yet.....with all that said, I actually still quite enjoyed the movie overall. Curious to see if that will still be the case now.

Iron man 2 :- 6.4/10 --> 6/10 most of the plot doesnt make sense but RDJ is still amazing.

If I'm reading this right, most people didn't like Thor? The original Thor. Which is odd to me. The original Thor had great things going for it and was very well made and entertaining. Great director, actors, good plot, good pacing.

I haven't rewatched it yet so will give my thoughts then but if this is the reaction to this Thor god knows what you guys thought of Thor 2.

Hmm, pie.
