Forums - Gaming - Soooo did the Xbox One X succeed?

No, I don't consider it a success either.

That's not to say things can't change later, with a price drop and more dedicated games.
But considering the value proposition of the X, I doubt they'll make it very popular.
I don't think it's worth the purchase, tech jump needs to be way higher.

Or better yet the experience jump needs to be generational in some shape or form, if not in graphics then in control or UI, new values, whatever

X doesn't provide that.

I think it accomplished it's main goal. Offer the most powerful console to gamers who love XB and crave specs. Everything else is a bonus.

Another point that some will have to grudgingly accept is 3rd party multiplatform titles are the dominant forces in the home console market.

X1X now does them better the PS4 and PS4 Pro and that in itself is going to attract customers who play games like Assassins Creed, COD and SW:BFII.

It's easy to spout off a dozen titles that are only on PS4, but most will never enter PS4's top 50 best sellers and will ultimately be a loss for the studios because at the end of the day more people care about COD than Nioh by a wide margin.

Succes on this site is determined by forum posters own agenda especially on vgchartz. So imagine some sales numbers and laugh/love/hate on them.

Sounds about right.

I believe it is to early to say that XB1X has already failed or already succeeded. To be sure we'll have to wait and see.

Although what I expect is that it will sell decently for this holiday and maybe a few months into the new year, and then mostly only the base model for XB1 will be bought.

Well how many people require the most powerful console to play COD, etc, is a question, and how many would rather spend considerably less and be able to buy more games is another.

One big problem the XB1X has is that PS4 has mostly wrapped up all of the major 3rd party franchises this gen already. It's possible PS may lose some of them due to XB1X, but with the sales figures and trajectory for PS4 overall, it's unlikely to change this gen.

XB1X does a great job of healing wounds, but It's not really meant to win a war. XB2 will be that warrior when the time comes.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

Given that the console has been out over a month now and it has been beating the PS4 Pro in pretty much every comparison (not unexpected but still a huge benefit)

Congrats, great way to start a flamewar.

Now, to rain into your parade, here are a few numbers (from an apparently trustworthy resetera source). The X sold 430k in November in NA (making up roughly two thirds of ww sales), the Pro sold 260k in comparison. PS4 sales in NA make up about a third of ww sales, so we can guess ww sales of the Pro at around 780k (probably even higher, as MC reported high sales of Pros in Japanrecently). Solidly BEATING ww sales of the X, even in its launch month. That simple calculation would shoot down your pet theory. Now how's that for starting a flamewar?

LOL.

The Xbox One X sold 430k in the US in November.

The Pro sold 260k in the US in November last year.

These are the numbers we currently have.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

The system launched last month, I think it is too early to pass judgement about its lifetime prospects.

However, I think success is a relative term. I am pretty sure MS has released the One X to achieve specific goals.

1. Have a flagship console that focuses mainly on gaming again (unlike the original XONE which attempted to be an all encompassing media device). MS prided itself on providing powerful machines with an emphasis on gaming with the original Xbox and the Xbox 360, with the Xbox One they decided to go with a less powerful machine and greater focus on other forms entertainment of which gaming was only one aspect. This strategy has not really worked too well for them, and so they have been returning to their gaming-focused roots. This return back to gaming is evident in the evolution of the Xbox One's software were Kinect features were dropped, certain multimedia specific features like the entertainment guide, snapping capabilities, etc were dropped in favour of opening up more resources to devs. The One X is a full return to what the Xbox was before 2013.

2. Attract gamers that pay for more expensive equipment and will most likely spend more money on games and peripherals.

I don't think unit sales compared to other systems is really the priority with this system. In fact, Phil Spencer himself stated that he believes the One S will continue to have higher volumes of unit sales compared to the One X. Now obviously the amount of units sold is a determinant for success (I am sure MS has targets), but it does not need to sell as many (and it probably will not sell as many) as the base PS4 Slim, Switch or Xbox One S in order to be successful.

The X1 is the the least technically capable console available and is 4 years old. The PS4, and increasingly, the PS4 Pro, are acting as a baseline for development. So new hardware is on the verge of being required to enjoy this generation of games without taking a sizable performance hit.

And I'm not sure what major 3rd party franchises are "locked up" on PS4, but when you compare the top 20 selling titles for Xbox One and PS4, the lists are largely the same. Capcom even put Monster Hunter World on Xbox One because of the significant market the Xbox One represents.

There's no war. It's not a zero sum game

XB1S is the cheapest yes, but the PS4 and Pro are also considerably cheaper than XB1X. Performance hit depends on what you expect out of a $250 console. I for one expect very little, so when I see the newest games on PS4 and XB1S I am still impressed. When I see 1st party games like Halo and HZD, I'm even more impressed.

Any major 3rd party game on PS4 with exclusive content that XB1S/X doesn't have or has to wait for. I'm not saying at all that 3rd party will drop XB, but less content goes to XB due to their significantly lesser market share. Just like how 360 used to hold that over PS3, it's how the devs/pubs roll.

Well war may be an extreme word, but it's most certainly a competition of sorts, because even if your XB and have the backing of MS, you can only lose so much ground before you either change your tactics or they pull the plug. Hence the reason for the change in direction from XB1 to XB1S to XB1X.

Too early to tell, we first need to see sales outside holiday season.
