I had a blast with TFA, didn't like RO at all, after reading the spoilers for TLJ I'm excited, but have my expectations pretty high so I will probably be let down. Oh well, we shall see soon.

I don't care what anybody else says though, I'm going to just live in my own bubble and pretend that everything that happens outside of the original trilogy is fanfiction (yes, even the Lucas-helmed prequels).

I kinda agree with you, especially with the prequels. I like to think of them as non-canon, to the point where a reference to something from the prequel trilogy in TFA or TLJ makes me cringe. Luke Skywalker should never have to say Darth Sidious.

I agree with almost everything you said about the movie, but there's one thing that we clearly differ about it. Which is the score (I'd rate it about a 9/10 probably) and the casino scene, which I felt it was terrific. You've already written one of the reasons I think it was pretty great, which is the notion that the Empire and the Rebels are not so black-and-white. But I think you probably missed the main reason that whole sub-plot exists, and why I think they did a terrific job with that. Which is the vision of the "third side" of the conflict and their lives. The lives of the people who are earning money out of war and people's suffering. Arms dealers' who are now living in luxury and gambling with all the money earned by war. Which was pretty well reflected in the Rose/Finn conversation at the casino. And the dystopian feeling of that planed, with child exploitation, animal brutality. The ugly hidden behind the beauty. I tend to enjoy a lot when movies take their time to show the other side of the conflict, so I really enjoy that sub-plot.

Yeah, I agree there was a nugget of potential in that sub-plot, but Johnson never really unpacked it. I mean, if he wanted to hammer home the idea of child labor and of the collateral damage of the war between First Order and resistance forces in general, then he should have really committed to it. That means cutting out the perfunctory chase sequence, and the prison breakout and other fluff.

The scene just isn't efficient, especially when Luke touches on the idea elsewhere in the movie. Heck, even Kylo Ren touches on it. This idea that -isms and dogma are more destructive than helpful is one of the film's main themes.

It was pretty subtle, but I really enjoyed to unpack all the details by myself and see a pretty powerful social commentary. I still think the more "rompy" stuff of that sub-plot worked well among the more dark and dialogue-packed Rey/Luke part.

See, people bring up the casino area a lot. While I agree it could have been handled better, it is not even close to the worst offender to the film. No no no, that crown goes to a scene involving Leia. If you have seen the movie you know the EXACT scene I'm referring to. That made me and the entire audience go "What the hell?" -my gf was with me. She's not a big SW fan but still really liked the movie, said during the Leia scene: "Ummm.. *whispering at me* is the Force supposed to do that..?" and I went "Um. I've never seen that. But I guess..?"

That was some parody shit. I almost choked on my popcorn

That was so wrong xD. I really liked the film, but that scene hasn't really gave me a good first impression.

She's in Zero G, if you know anything about newtons third law then you'll know what she does is fine using a force push against the parts of the hull which were blown out into space.

My main issue is the scene where the mon calimari ship turns 180 and jumps to lightspeed destroying Snokes main ship at a cost of just one rebel (and a freighter completely emptied of fuel, ships and rebels) All I could think about that scene was.... "why did they wait to do it?" if the point of waiting was to get to the dark planet... their whole plan involved leading the new order right to the planet they wanted to use, one of my mates said that they waited so as to cover the fleeing transports, but they actually stated that those transports were all cloaked and the only reason the new order knew to fire upon them was the betrayal by the codemaster who informed the new order of the placement of the 30 ships so they begin firing at the space that he told them they were in.

Had the rebels launched the transports in cloak before that point then, done the 180 turn and lightspeed, they would still have lost the main ship... but they would not have wasted so much time and effectively gifted the new order the person who would betray the cloaked ships, also they would not have lost the rest of the fleet, all the medical frigates etc which were destroyed by running out of fuel and falling back into snokes ships fire... I'm sure the new orders fleet would have been a mess while they tried to work out what just happened and they most certainly would have been more worried that their supreme leader was still alive rather than go chasing rebel medical frigates or look for 30 cloaked transports heading towards that old rebel base planet.

All in all... that huge silence scene.... all I could think about was.... "why now? if you can end a chase at any stage with the destruction of the ones chasing you.... why not do it?"

Yeah the casino part I didnt enjoy - the codebreaker guy tried too hard in acting for a Star Wars movie, he actually felt more like a Disney animated character lol.

Also the Porgs were pretty cringy...didnt they have a scene with Chewbacca and one porg in the last movie too during a flight scene? I was like, did they copy it again?

I felt that they made Poe look weak especially in the escape portion of the story. I thought they were gonna make the vice admiral lady be a villain , a traitor but nope...

Overall, I enjoyed the movie quite well despite its obvious flaws.

Btw who were those red guys in the scene where both Rey and Ren fought after killing Snoke? Were they the knights of ren?

They are called Praetorian Guards and are based on Emperor Palpatine's Imperial Guards, who also wore red. As far as I know the Knights of Ren are separate, they were other students of Luke's that Kylo corrupted and took with him. Which means they are all force sensitive. Kylo is supposed to be their leader, but we still haven't seen them after 2 movies. I assume now that Kylo is leading the First Order we will see them as his personal guards in Episode 9.

The Knights of Ren did make an appearance during the making of this movie, they accompanied Kylo to the Jedi Temple where Luke was training Ray in an earlier draft of the movie, flying out on a Tie Silencer and confronting Luke before he would complete the training of "The Last Jedi" but that scene will most likely only exist now in deleted scenes.

Sources - Watched it live via telescope, the joys of living near the Jedi Temple haha.
