"I am convinced that the Switch is a fad that will go away within a year or two"

Pokémon!

You do realize Pokémon is also a fad that is going to fade away very quickly, right?

Yeah, I bet it won't even last a century. I barely give it another 20 years. Won't even make it to 1 billion games sold, what a failure of a franchise.

I have minor concerns about the long term Switch stability sales, especially in Europe, but it is not going to "fail" in any way.
The concept and the marketing are FAR more attractive than the WiiU (and tbh, even the Wii, but that market is gone) days.

I wasn't sold on Switch when it was announced, but my friends have convinced me. They all have kids. They have all said when the price comes down a bit they will be buying at least one unit for each kid. I've explained the technical performance and they don't care. It's the value and the ease of mind it will give them that they like.

They look at it like instead of buying a console, extra controllers and a couple of handhelds, they can buy each a Switch and they don't even really need a TV. Instead of buying a bunch of different games for the console and handhelds, they just buy the Switch version and that's it. The money they will save overall is huge, plus way less headaches. They even think paying for a large expensive micro SD card so the games can be on the tablet with no worry of losing them is totally worth it.

Looking at it from their perspective, it makes a lot of sense. This is why I see Switch succeeding long term. The buyers now will be the "older" crowd, and once the price comes down sales will continue due to the younger crowd. For the Nin hardcore, Switch is just the next big thing. For the casuals, it's a convenience/cost thing.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

You really hit the nail on the head there. People forget that the N64 had trouble because Sony took all of Nintendo's Japanese 3rd party support.  PS1 and PS2 sold well because of Japanese 3rd party support. The western devs played a much smaller role in Sony's dominance. Don't believe me? Name a key western 3rd party game on PS1 or PS2 not developed by Rockstar. Xbox had all the best western 3rd party games, and they got their buts kicked during the PS2/Xbox/GC gen.

The sad thing here is that many western 3rd party devs closed their doors during the 360/PS3 gen. During the XB1/PS4 gen the ones remaining are playing with microtransactions, premium editions, and day one DLC.

Switch just needs Namco Bandai, Sega/Atlus, Capcom, Level 5, Square Enix, and Falcom for 3rd party support. They just need these companies putting a serious effort into good 3rd party games. So far Sega/Atlus is working on SMTV, Capcom could bring MHXX west, Level 5 still loves Nintendo, Square Enix has Octopath, and Falcom just need to bring YS/Trails to Switch (probably an easy port job).

I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but this post isn't just meant for you. It's meant mostly for all those "Nintendo needs western 3rd party support" haters.

Edit: Here you go kiddos. I've listed all 3rd party western games from 2017 that got above 79% on Opencritic minus PC exclusives and Indies. This is what Nintendo haters think Nintendo "needs" to be competitive.

X-Com 2 (We have Mario x Rabbids though)

Injustice 2 (ridden with Day 1 DLC)

Pillars of Eternity Complete Edition

Assassin’s Creed Origins (Day 1 DLC and Microtransactions)

Destiny 2 (Microtransactions, Splatoon 2 is better)

Shadow of War (Microtransactions)

Prey

You can't call this an opinion. This is a prediction.

I dislike both voting options. The Wii had lousy 3rd party support but you can hardly call that a failure, particularly when the first party support was so strong. The Switch looks like it's going to get much better support and markets are already developing well for it. I can't see it going wrong for it, wheras the Wii U was basically dead in arrival.

PS2-Tony Hawk, Spider Man, Medal of Honor, Madden, Need for Speed, Crash Bandicoot, Guitar Hero, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Simpsons, James Bond, Lego, FIFA, True Crime, The Matrix, WWE, Hitman, Splinter Cell, Burnout, The Sims, Call of Duty, NBA Live, Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, Prince of Persia

All these franchises had an entry that sold in the multimillions.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

The Switch will have Pokemon. All other arguments are invalid.

The Switch doesn't need the big third party games. They need their own software that sells consoles, with some third party exclusives thrown in there and then all of the "AA" titles, I guess. (Attack on Titan 2 level quality) They don't need Battlefront, CoD or Anthem to succeed.
