Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Digital Foundry takes on Xenoblade Chronicles 2

A clear step up from XCX as far as in-game tech goes, but those resolutions... lord help me. I'm still looking forward to playing it, but the image quality is going to make me cringe.

Hopefully we'll see some of these issues get patched in the coming months (preferably before it's my turn to play it :p). I was pretty confident it'd at minimum have a variable resolution up to 900p in docked, but it could be that they simply ran out of time. Nintendo have been doing a good job of maintaining a steady flow of 1st party releases, and i expect Monolith were under pressure to fulfil their part in that plan.

Yikes, sub 500p...not good.

And the pop in of geometry and textures right in front of your face kind of breaks the immersion sometimes. But the gameplay, story, and overall art direction are on point. I just wish they'd spent a bit more time polishing.

I think that's not too bad. I mean, the original XC and XCX suffered from that too and it didn't bother me at all. And XC2 has less pop in than XCX... so that's seems like a minor issue to me.

As long as you don't play in portable mode, the game as it is now looks pretty good. 720p doesn't sound too great on paper, but it actually looks great on TV, I promise.

Oh, well that explains it. I played XCX on PC because I was broke, so pop in really didn't exist in that game for me. It's not a big deal in 2, but if they needed to add another 5 seconds to load times I'd be fine with that if that meant being able to load important geometry into the game on time.

"Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch: Great When Docked " is pretty rough when you consider portability being such a huge point for the console.

Anyone have comparisons for a resolution that low? That is higher than 3ds but lower than vita I think?

Exactly, higher than 3DS (that's 240p), lower than Vita (that would be 540p)... although some Vita games ran at some sub 540p resolutions that are pretty close to XC2 368p

I don't want to initiate a debate about playing a game that you don't own... But I can't resist to say that I don't like what you did. Specially considering that Xenoblade games don't have super high sales. No offense...

Hopefully they can fix some of this stuff with patches, especially the performance issues. Nintendo is usually good about things like that.

Yeah, they should be able to fix the framerate thing. It doesn't seem caused by the hardware not being able to handle what's on screen. If that was the case, nothing could be done about it without lowering some technical assets. It looks like some problem with how the console handles some memory elements.

The resolution though... I just don't know. I think we all agree that if BotW can be at least 640p portable and 810p when docked, XC2 should be able to hit a similar resolution (maybe a little lower... but definitely not 368p xD). But man... 368 it's SO LOW. Even if Monolith didn't have time to optimize the game... I don't know, it just seems too low. Maybe they really could not make it better xD

BotW is a difficult reference point here. It was very technically ambitious for the WiiU, but it was ultimately still a WiiU game. XCX was also ambitious for its platform, and XC2 is a clear step up from that in most technical respects. It running bellow BotW isn't that unreasonable (even if i think BotW should run a bit better than it does). That said, i do think XC2 should be higher than it is. 720p in docked i can understand, even if i thought we'd at least get a variable up to 900p. 368p though... that's almost 4 times less than 720p. That makes no sense at all.

Unfortunately i think it's unlikely i'll agree, i tend to value image quality a lot more than most people. I've been playing at 4k on PC for 1.5+ years, so even 1080p irks me occasionally now if the AA isn't good

...okay? There's plenty of developers working in the gaming industry now who had to pirate games because they couldn't afford them. If I get the chance I'll buy it... just like I bought XC2 and 1. And Xenoblade has always had poor sales, I doubt I caused that to happen...

I didn't said that you were the cause of the low sales of the franchise. What I said was that because the franchise sells poorly, I don't like that people pirate their games. Is like adding more fuel to the fire xD

And... the fact that you can't afford something does not allow you to take it for free. Especially if we're are talking about something so irrelevant for our lives as videogames.

I don't want to continue this conversation. I'm stopping it here.

Damn, those are some high standards xD
And to think that I'm cool with playing with my 3DS these days ;D
