The only problem is that even at polygon crunching, the PS3 gets ran over by another current-gen (can we stop using next-gen already?) console... The 360 of course.

Don't take this personally, but I think you need to either post some numbers or references supporting those claims or remove your pink-colored glasses when you're looking at the PS3 future.


 From what i read the royalties of BR would be in the billions.

 If you doubt its enouth to cover any costs, why dont you prove it with numbers.

I would say a bit less marketing and a bit more planning would have been better. It's structure has several problems, that make this beheamoth rather nasty for its developpers, which makes the plattform not very attractive for developers. Development costs will be a significant issue at this Gen, and in this aspect the PS-3 tends to be a bit nasty.

BR revenue in the billions really could mean anything. Really, I have no idea how much revenue BR will pull in for Sony. I sure would like to see some kind of financial analysis, not just some random quote from a PR guy. Trying to research the subject has been pretty hard, so far such information has been elusive.

Because I'm not the one who made the initial claim, and I don't feel like wasting my time trying to disprove other people's possible mistakes...

very simple: People will pay ANY price, just to play FFXIII, MGS4, GT5, FFXIIIv, KZ2, HS, LBP, Uncharted, Lair, 2! Team Ico games, Folklore, G3, NGS, GoW3, MS2, R&C, 8 days, Factor 5 - Turricane, Wardevil and so on. It`s not about LIST, x360, Wii also will have good games, my POINT - that true GAMER won`t ignore such amazing exclusive PS3 games. And another POINT - IF KZ2 really will look almost like e3 2k5 render (haze already looking good), then PRICE won`t matter at all. Just like people go to moovie-theater, to see AMAZING visuals, they will pay money, just to play game with AMAZING visuals. After releasing all those exclusive games, it will be only a matter of time, when it will win. And Wii, it`s just another game console, it`s like comparing ps3/x360 to PSP/NDS. It`s DIFFERENT auditory. =)

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

 

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.

People won't pay any price to play a game. Well, at least the numbers Sony needs to win won't pay any price to game.

I don't think Sony has a chance of winning this generation. Their only hope is that they can bleed into next gen with the PS3 and make back some profits then. A price drop to $400 would put such a strain on SCE that it's not going to happen.

Optimistically speaking, let's say Sony is losing $100 on each PS3 in October this year. They drop the price to $400, meaning they're losing $300 on each console sold. That means that they would need to sell roughly 40 games (estimates for royalties are $7-8 per game, I gave them $8) for every console sold to break even.

That's never going to happen. And if they stay at $600 until next year, they're opening the door for MS and Nintendo to make significant price drops at the same time, negating any progress Sony would make with a later price drop.

The PS3 can't win this gen - I think its already lost the top spot to the Wii.

The best Sony can do, is a gaming blitz to stay competitive and overtake the 360. Then end up in a DS vrs PSP type situation.

Basically, they have to beat the 360 (and they should, thanks to Japan). If they can't do that, the PS3 will go down as the biggest disaster in the history of gaming.

If they actually can get the PS3 to outsell the Wii - in *any* territory - even for a couple of weeks - I might reconsider. But at the moment, the only way this is looking likely is if the Wii is supply constrained. The demand for the Wii will *always* greatly exceed the demand for the PS3 - regardless of pricing, games or anything else.

 Yeah, because so far tons of people have paid any price for RFOM, Motorstorm and VF5.

And I guess its just like the PS3s being sold on ebay, and how they went for 1000s long after release.

 Well, I wouldnt say ANY price. The most I am willing to pay for the PS3 is around $400. I am not interested in MGS4 or FFXIII. The only exclusives on the PS3 I am interested in are Ratchet, Jak, Sly and GoW3. Possibly Heavenly Sword. However, I can skip paying a high price, considering the gameplay is still the same as the last gen versions of the games, only prettier graphics. 

You are starting to sound like SONY PR-"Any REAL gamer would tell you that they want a PS3".

Side Note: I dont ever go see movies in theaters. Why pay $9(per person, with friends) to see it when it comes out, when I can wait a few months till it comes out on DVD, rent it for $1 (the NEW Release Machine) and watch it with all my friends. I can pause it whenever I want, re-wind if I missed anything. Watch the extra content. Watch it multiple times. I pay only a fraction of the cost and miss out on what? Big Screen? No big for me.
