Forums - Microsoft Discussion - What does MS need to do?

@Rocketpig , it's never been about what they're able to put on the shelves , it's whether there will be a demand for it or not.Releasing next gen hardware early also has crazy disadvantages.

-High hardware costs
-Poor software support
-High development costs
-Damage in consumer confidence

@psrock Regardless of Japan's position (wether it be 1st ,2nd or 3rd) it's still a huge source of revenue , with the US going into recession and European and asian mark experiencing growth , MS will need to shift it's focus away from NA.

MS has been trying in Others big time. the problem is their brand is lacking outside of NA, aNd they need t fix it. The shocking thing is MS has, at the moment , the most important factor in winning a console war, yet they cannot win.

GAMES.

Absolutely, which is why I get a sneaking suspicion that MS plans to push the 360 to 2011.

Make a console that doesn't break?

Seriously though. Nothing they can do at this point. But the good news is they don't have to. Sales are up, and they are making a profit. Life is good for MS at the moment.

Well right now, it's Crysis. Console gamers are also getting bastardized versions of games like BioShock and Call of Duty 4.

This year, we should see a few PC games that look and play much better on PC than anything on a console. In two more years, the gap will be huge. Shit, most console games can't even run at 1080p. That will be a serious limitation moving forward.

Hmm has there really been serious complains of console owners complaining about how CoD4 or Bioshock play on their consoles compared to how they play on the PC ????? Because I haven't heard them...

Console owners aren't complaining because most of them haven't seen the games run at 60fps locked in the equivalent of a 1080p resolution. BioShock in particular looked quite a bit better on PC. I've only heard my friends talk about CoD4 on PC, never seen it run.

I wish people would stop caomparing consoles and PC's. At the end of the day the percentage of people with rigs good enough to outperform the PS3/360 pales in comparison to the amount of console owners. I am no way paying to constantly to uprgade my system for a few more textures. Consoles reach a larger mass of gamers and offer ease of use and therefore the majority could not really give a stuff if a $2000 system outperforms a $400 system. I am gauranteed when i buy a console game it will work in my machine, when i played on my PC there would always be some stupid problem that would crop up. If you pay more for a graphics card than a games console then you should expect better but as i said the mjaority could not care less.

If you read my posts, I'm talking about technology here and how it will apply to the next generation of consoles. The comparison is only to illustrate that PCs are already ahead of consoles (rather cheaply too, about $600-700) and how that in 2-3 more years, that gap will only widen.

Meaning that by 2010, MS will be able to produce a $300-400 console that will absolutely annihilate the 360 and PS3.

And won't have any third party support aside from PS3 and 360 ports...

Issue is not wether they can do it but wether there will be a demand for it and active support for it from third parties...

Name one third party that is unhappy with this gen and has been quoted as waiting for next gen hardware to be able to put their ideas into the game they want....

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

@ Rocketpig aren't we getting to the point of releasing new consoles every5-6 years is getting pointless. Other than graphics not much has changed since PS1. They added online but that's about it. The wii did somthing new and it worked so shouldn;;t the next console that MS release be something new rather than an upgrade to the past?

Mil. Sellers:

Wii:      25 titles       101.4 mil total    avg 4 mil per title

PS3:     14 titles      28.6 mil total    avg ~2 mil per title

360:     41 titles      89.8 mil total   avg  >2 mil per title

Microsoft doens't need to release a new console like SEGA 'had' to when the Saturns days were counted,
while the PS was still going strong

because gaming is just a small part of microsofts activities
while SEGA had to go multi-platform or release a new console

besides that, the xbox is doing much better than the Saturn did

BUT!

you know that MS released the 360 far WITHIN 4 years after the Xbox
a thing that hasn't happend the last 20 years

so in  2010 it will be even 5 years after the release of the 360
so you never know what they are planning

There is always room for improvement, it's just a matter of whether developers have the budgets to take advantage of said improvements.

What I think will push MS to upgrade is their desire for motion control, HD media (Blu-ray), and new technology to extend their IPTV and theatre hub plans.

wasn't there an article a week ago posted
about some industry guy saying that it would'nt make sense for sony and microsoft to release another console?

he had some good points I remember

The buzz on many sites is that MS will go the way of DL and not BR  and i see whay you are saying.  I might help MS other plans for the console but gaming wise i see no real benefit fora new console outside of graphics.

With Blu-ray becoming the de facto standard for high definition optical content, MS is going to be forced to add it to their console if they wish to become the living room hub of the future.

They'll always push the downloads because they make money from them but they also need Blu-ray to round out the capabilities of the device.
