Agreed. I want it to happen just for the salty tears, lol

I just find it rather amusing as to why it's not allowed on the list, simply because some here and elsewhere do not like the game at all, thus they believe it shouldn't be on the list. The same happened with Undertale, where people thought it was some cheap cruddy indie title.

People talk of busted performance with PuB, and I'm sitting here staring at Nier's PC port, which still hasn't received a single patch, while Nioh has.

Hell, LoL is up on the list and it's a rather old Moba. I kinda wished Heroes of the Storm had a chance up there, especially seeing as how Blizzard paid more attention to it during their Blizzcon.

There are valid reasons for wanting PUBG to be excluded. There's a popular reddit post at the moment expressing that only full releases (i.e. finished games) should be included, and that doesn't seem like an unreasonable position. We don't review unreleased titles, so it makes sense that some would feel we shouldn't nominate them for GOTY too.

I'm personally apathetic, but there are logical arguments for both its inclusion and exclusion.

And what of busted port jobs, that still haven't been tended to, or is it okay when a PC port is busted and the console version up for nomination?.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Pretty sad how pathetic everyone's being over someone daring to include a game people like! It would be so funny to see it win

It's because it's a popular indie game, that just happens to be in early access, yet it's on for sale at the store.

Mind you, this tends to happen every year, always some game that doesn't deserve to be up on the list, or is shitty by a select group's form of standards.

I see people clamouring for Nier to win an award, yet I'm sitting here, still waiting for SE to sort out the PC version, which hasn't received a single patch at all and it's been months now. If we're allowed to rag on an early access title, we're damn well right enough to rag on a port job. Imagine if there was a multiplat game, where the console versions were busted, and the game was up for the awards, it wouldn't fly and people would rag on it in an instant.

you're right. that's part of it. but let's remember something : Overwatch was hated for winning last year, and that was (from what I know) a pretty complete game all around for PC and console platforms.

It's not just about how stable a game is, I think it's also that people are just pretentious. If it's a multiplayer game that's just a fun multiplayer game? Disqualified! Don't you know MP only is below the singleplayer master race?

You have a point, but you know, it kinda... is.

I mean, multiplayer games aren't necessarily inferior to single player games, but I think at some point the industry needs to draw a line because they're so different in nature. When it comes to something like video game awards, it only makes sense to favor the single player games because those tend to be the ones with better artistic traits such as visual direction, storytelling, more concise level design and all that. These types of awards are meant to award the best works of art, not the best sports. In an ideal world, you really wouldn't be mixing both together... but here we are.

I don't really agree. The experiences are extremely different, but the artistic merit in Overwatch is that the developers made a multiplayer game that was so fun in the first place. That is art, it's just portraying something you feel less valuable. And by nature it shouldn't be less valuable automatically. I mostly play single player games but I think people who were upset that Uncharted 4 didn't win by default, were being ridiculous. Nothing overly great about that game, they're about the same in terms of quality. From what I seem to remember, most of the available options for GOTY 2016 weren't exactly mindblowing.

Overwatch certainly had more going for it but I don't see much "art" in most multiplayer games, and certainly not PUBG. They're a different kind of experience, and one that was born long after single player games, so it only makes sense for the industry to focus its praise on the single player games that made it become as prominent as it is today.

Regardless, the merits of single player games and multiplayer games are very different. You can say Overwatch has plenty of good artistic material with its characters and stuff, but in the end the reason why the game was successful is because of how well it created a competitive environment through refining the core gameplay and through balancing and that sort of thing. Sure you can praise the level design or the core gameplay for it as much as you would for single player games, but the way in which the levels are designed and the way in which the core gameplay works is vastly different to that of the best single player games.

Maybe splitting everything is a bit too extreme, but I definitely feel the world would be more at peace if we had a "single player GotY" and a "competitive GotY" or something.

Well you're the one who arbitrarily focused on only artistic merits of games. I like to think that all games are art, even shitty ones, by definition. But "artistic" implies a little more, like an actual theme or statement being made. In that context, most single player games are not really "artistic" tbh. Or they're very hollow artistically. Either way, I think the real answer is for people to just stop bitching about opinions and realize A ) Award shows don't matter and B ) Games can get awards and not be for you personally. But I wouldn't mind a single player GOT and multiplayer GOTY.
