Forums - Gaming - The Discussion Thread: The Greatest Games Event 2017 - FINISH YOUR LISTS

I'll probably do a short write-up of the games in my list in groups of three every few days. Then I'll put the hints for my next few at the end of the message. So let's get started with the first three games.

#50

previous year's rank: 29

Super Mario 64

Starting off my list this year is Super Mario 64, a game I still genuinely enjoy whenever I play it. There are elements in it that haven't necessarily aged perfectly, like the camera, but on the whole it is still an excellent game. However, it could very well be that this is the last year Super Mario 64 finds its way into my top 50, as it already dropped several spots from last years list, and I have yet to play any new games released in 2017.

#49

Previous Year's Rank: 28
Tales of Symphonia

Tales of Symphonia was my personal introduction to the series, and I have many fond memories playing the game in co-op with a bunch of my friends. We did quite literally everything the game had to offer, got every cursed weapon, beat all the optional bosses, and more. Yet, it might follow the same fate as the Super Mario 64 next year, but who knows. I might replay the game at some point and like it even more than I do now. We'll see.

#48

Previous Year's Rank: New
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II

The first newcomer to my top 50. I played through both the first and second game in this series this year, and I absolutely loved both of them, to the point that the trilogy's conclusion is one of my most anticipated games now. In fact, the entire Legend of Heroes series has quietly, and quite unexpectedly become one of my favourite video game series ever, and games like this are the reason why. The characters, story,  gameplay, music and nearly everything else are all just excellent. Strongly recommended.

And now the hints for the next three games:
#47: The first game in the now two part series that got its second installment this year. It was also a sequel to a game with a completely different name. The man responsible for both often appears in public with a mask covering his head.

#46: An NES action platformer, often considered among the best in the series. Its developer has somewhat neglected the series in recent years.

#45: Building memories inside a dying man's mind.

Wow, those are very steep drops. Is that a normal thing in your list?

Is #46 Castlevania? Not sure about the other two.

There are two main reasons for the drops. First is that everything outside of the top 15 is in a constant state of change and the list is pretty much just how I feel at that exact moment. I replayed Super Mario 64 this year, and it didn't hold up quite as well as I remembered, hence the drop on that one for example. Another reason is just that there are a number of new games on the list.

Your guess is wrong unfortunately. This series is a bit more on the futuristic side.

#49

This took Castlevania from action platformer to full on Metroid clone. It was also one of the few games at the time that proved 2D still has much to offer. Not much else to say about this. I feel like it's one of the Playstations best games and deserves to be mentioned. I hate to see it so high on the list, putting it in danger of being removed, but these modern times, see better games everyday.

Just a great hack n' slash with a massive list of weapons, that all feel totally different from one another. It beat out Bayonetta for both length and weapon variety. Going back and playing as Virgil or just playing on very hard mode is great. I

Mega Man 2 then?

That's the one.

My my #48, I selected PeaceMaker, which is a 2007 strategy game wherein the player is tasked with achieving peace between Palestine and Israel. One learns some invaluable things about the dynamics of the situation and the delicate balancing act between maintaining popular approval and realizing diplomatic breakthroughs that the respective heads of state face. The game still feels pretty fresh ten years after its release because the conflict is still going on.

I disagree with almost everything mzuzek said about Pokemon sun/moon and the soundtrack is great what are you guys on? -_-.

anyway next 5 hints
#45 A frog, A Fox and a Chestnut.

#44 Instead of commanding them and telling them what to do, you instead become one and explore multiple areas that are randomly generated completing missions as you eventually try to save the world from a meteor.

#43 I'm small, I eat things, there's a reflecting object and it breaks, there's 4 of me.

#42 The Newest adventure of this attorney where spirit channelling is the main focus.

#41 I'm flat and instead of an rpg, I have rpg elements and play like a platformer. I also have the best story in this entire franchise including main story and other spin off titles hands down, no debate.

Interesting, that game was on my list this year until being dropped at the last second. I think it's the first time I felt actually a bit bad for leaving a game out of the top 50, so I guess this post can serve as its moment of honor, or something. You got #51 Mega Man 2, I still like you!

It has taken a bit of a fall on my list as well, although not as drastic as SM64 or Tales of Symphonia.

The soundtrack isn't great, it's absolute garbage with loads of bad songs. I study and write music, so my opinion on it must be factually, objectively more accurate. (I'm not being fully serious here)

#44 Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, uhh... I haven't played any, so I don't know, Explorers of Sky?
#43 sounds like some Kirby game, I haven't played them either... there's one called Crystal Shards, so that one?
#41 Super Paper Mario?

#44 Correct series wrong game

#43 ^

#41 Correct!

I studied music as well therefore my opinion on it must also be factual and objectively more accurate than other persons as well (:P)

Duck Hunt

  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
  • 1987
  • Arcade Shooter
  • Nintendo

'Duck Hunt' is very likely to be the first game I ever played, though the Videopac game 'Gunfighter' (#50) or 'Super Mario Bros.', which was on the same Nintendo cartridge, are also very possible. Sadly, there's no way to know. The game is a classic either way though, and me remembering playing it so clearly, while being so young, is testament to it being the game that at least introduced me to Nintendo, even if I didn't know what it was exactly.

I played it, and the Black Box 'Soccer' game, regularly with my cousin on the Nintendo Entertainment System of my aunt, first at her house, later at my grandmother's when my aunt replaced the NES with the SNES. She was an avid gamer at the time and like every gamer that ever played this game, we all grew to despise the dog. It's funny, how that dog is today probably one of the most referenced and recognizable gaming characters ever created.

I loved the light-gun in every way from how it looked, the sound it made when pulling the trigger to the sound the television made when shooting those ducks. As probably known by everyone, the game has two modes; the Duck Hunt mode and the Clay Pigeon mode where you shoot clay pigeons instead of 'real' ducks. Even though our parents wanted us to play the clay pigeon-mode, we usually played the real duck mode, and it remains, though simple, as one of my best memories in my gaming life.
