Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Discussion Thread: The Greatest Games Event 2017 - FINISH YOUR LISTS

Get ready for a series of posts. I'm on the road today (not driving of course) so I've got some time to post about my Top 25 games. Let's see how far I make it.

On my phone so no fancy images just plain ol' text.

#25. Super Mario Bros. 3

I first played the imported Japanese version of this game and was obsessed with it right away. The new power ups, the world map, collecting items, the short but incredibly well crafted stages, this game brought so much to the Mario series.

To this day I enjoy going through all worlds without any whistles and fight all of Bowser's koopalings on my way to rescue Princess Toadstool from his clutches.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Previous Year: New

Somewhat unexpectedly, the 4th Uncharted game actually became my favourite in the entire series, surpassing the 2nd entry. While it may lack that one massive setpiece like the train level in Among Thieves or the sinking ship in Drake's Deception, it is the most consistently entertaining and well written entry in the series. It also serves as a fitting end to the story of Nathan Draken, giving him the send-off he deserves. The gameplay is improved compared to the earlier games as well, with much smoother climbing and gunplay.

Hint for #9:

Father's quest to get his surrogate daughter across the United States.

The Last of Us

Correct once again.

#24. Mario Kart: Double Dash

This is Mario Kart game introduced the All Cup Tour and that's what me and my brother would continuously do whenever we played. Fighting tooth and nail for that 1st place (because by that point the AI was no match for us so it was a contest between the two of us with 6 other scrubs for distraction).

This game had a great selection of tracks and also some fun battle modes although most of my time was spent racing.

#23. Super Mario 3D World

The infamous "fake" 3D Mario title. On the unpopular Wii U, had an horrible reveal, was not Mario Galaxy 3 or Mario 128, this led many to look down on this gem of a game.

The game brings the feeling of 2D Mario to the 3D realm. The game is bursting with fresh ideas, one after the other. The level design is endlessly inventive and the power ups are a mix of old and new. The cat bell being the stand out giving Mario great climbing abilities and claws to take down his enemies.

Another great feature of the game is the multiplayer mode where up to 4 players can "cooperate" to reach the end of the level (first). Each playable character has his or her own unique traits which encourages trying different characters to tackle the challenges before you.

#22. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

This game is to this day the best Metroidvania out there (that is not a Metroid game). Blending RPG elements with side scrolling exploration. Sympony of the Night gave us two huge castles to explore as Alucard deals with his daddy issues.

The game features tons of weapons, armors and accessories to be found. The boss fight are plenty and thrilling. Your trek through Dracula's castle is accompanied by a fantastic soundtrack making discovering a new section even more rewarding.

Finally, let's not forget the great awful voiceovers that gave us gems like "What is a man?".

9.   The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild

After Ocarina of Time came out Zelda really stopped moving forward. The series turned into a tradition, instead of a series that grows with time. To make matters worse every Zelda after Ocarina did everything worse than Ocarina. There were almost always less dungeons, less things to discover, and less new unique ideas. After nearly 20 years BotW finally changed all that. Eiji Aonuma rebuilt the series from the ground up, while keeping the spirit of the original games. BotW gets rid of what I'd like to call "video game logic". In other games why can't you drop a boulder on someone? Why can't you light a field on fire? Why can't you kill a monster with Cuccoos? Videogames are riddled with things that should work, but don't, and things that work, but shouldn't. This breaks immersion, but with BotW many of these instances have been removed. Once you play the game on hard mode you start to get forced to get creative with ways to kill enemies. This opens your eyes to the possibilities, and make you truly realize how much freedom and creativity you have in the game. The world of BotW is bigger than Skyrim, yet there's always something to do around every corner. You can't walk for more than a few minutes in any given area without finding something like a Korok, Enemy Camp, Treasure Chest, etc. The addition of Climbing and Gliding gives you the ability to go anywhere you want at any time. Going from that sort of freedom to games like Horizon, where you can't only climb certain areas, and have to hoof it down a mountain is just flat out jarring. How many times have you played a videogame thinking "I have to get down there, without dying"? Or "I have to figure out a way up there"? Chances are you spend a good ten to twenty minutes wasting time, just to reach your goal. Finally, the weapons, and potions are really meaningful. Nintendo could have made it so that all weapons are permanent, but that would just lead to easily killing all enemies with your +120 attack ultra rare Lynel drop. Instead weapons degrade over time forcing you to use potions to help fight enemies. The Witcher 3 has a potion system, but it's far too weak and useless, so nobody uses it. On the flip side Elder Scrolls titles have potion systems that borderline break the game. Nintendo perfected potions in this game. They aren't too OP, but aren't useless either. Anyway this is the best Zelda title in nearly 20 years, and the best open world game ever made.
