I personally using 1TB 2.5" USB HDD, but if you dont need much space you can use even USB Flash memory.

Something I forgot to ask that I am curious about: How much space did you end up using?

I have hacked Wii U so basically I downloaded almost even better Wii U, Wii or GC game on my HDD, I think I using around 500GB of space.

Which drive do you use?

a "freecom" (don't ask.. i got it from a customer) 2TB USB3.0 drive.. it would have worked with just one plug if the WiiU had USB 3.0 interfaces
Now i just use the backwards-compatible extra power-plug thing you got with it.

i had a 200GB USB 2.0 drive that self-sufficient with 1 plug also.. but it got full pretty quick. it was terrible (USB 2.0 is)

I kinda want to use my current one for another device. That's why I was asking. Appreciate the reply.

I had a 2TB Seagate external on my Wii U. Wish I could use that on my Switch.

I had over 40 downloaded games, some were indie and Virtual console and a handful of full retail games. I also had the 10GB optional performance updates for Xenoblade X to get the best experience possible. I would probably guess at using around 300 GB.

I bought a 2TB Toshiba Canvio for my Wii U. Worked fine during the three years I used it.

219GB

Toshiba Canvio works well, but make sure to buy a Y-cable because you need the power from two USB slots.

The Desktop and Pro versions don't need it. I bought an older version of the former and costed me 60 dollars, if you look around some stores you might get it at a similar price.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

WiiU supports up to USB2.0, as it's been mentioned on this thread, those can work with one cable only.

There should be no advantage of using a USB3.0 on the WiiU. You'll even have to use a y-cable for the usb powered ones.
