Forums - Gaming Discussion - The VG Music sharing thread

I'm very much into video game music, and I know you are too. Being enthousiast as we are, I was wondering what everyone tastes are regarding vgm.

I have 4 topics to get us going:

1 - Share 3 tracks you believe that pushed the limits of the system it was released on (and you like of course).

2 - Share 3 track you believe are really good, but are never talked about/as popular as let's say, a game's main theme (overshadowed track basically).

3 - Lastly, A single track that you think would fit on your profile page as an intro.

4 - Bonus track (because why not).

(My only rule is, pls not entire soundtracks).

I will start of course:

1

Solstice on NES (Title theme) Tim Follin is a genius

Plok on SNES (Beach) Tim mfing Follin again!

DKC 2 on SNES (Stickerbush Symphony), This one well known, but i'm still amazed by it. So good.

2

Baten Kaitos on Gamecube (Soft Labyrinth) People mostly only care about True Mirror, but the whole soundtrack is brilliant.

F-Zero on SNES (Port Town) The most memorable ones are Mute City and Big Blue, but there are some amazing tracks besides those two.

Ys I & II on PSP /PC (Palace of Destruction) Besides the beautiful Feena track, this game has some amazing music, this is the first dungeon theme!

3

One of my favorite tracks from one of my favorite games

4

Advance Wars Days of Ruin on DS (Stormy Times) Play the soundtrack in your car. See what happens.

Very curious to see what you guys post.

Like literally just the entire Pokemon Sun and Moon soundtrack. But this will have to do:

I'll do Topic 1:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDLj143lxVk&index=55&list=PLcEun0ol29M0LBzbM8G1FkI8IcViwIU0H

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnaVTcUDQMA&index=90&list=PLcEun0ol29M0LBzbM8G1FkI8IcViwIU0H

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By5jhTWOsY0&list=PLcEun0ol29M0LBzbM8G1FkI8IcViwIU0H&index=95

Go Overboard with Topic 4 or basically doing Topic 1 twice:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSVDUe2ymZY&list=PLcEun0ol29M0LBzbM8G1FkI8IcViwIU0H&index=64

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t_C-CgJ-3A&index=11&list=PLcEun0ol29M0LBzbM8G1FkI8IcViwIU0H

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf3fvqmKB1M&list=PLcEun0ol29M0LBzbM8G1FkI8IcViwIU0H&index=82

And Topic 3 is pretty obvious for me:

The 3DS is the little system that could in the audio department.

This one is hard for me because I'm not much of a music guy, and your no.1 list has some difficult criteria (like pushing the limits in what sense? Jumping over the capabilities of the console? I'm not sure how to quantify that in music terms).

Let's give this a go:

1.-

Liberi Fatali, from Final Fantasy VIII. The first time ever Nobuo Uematsu went experimental with chorus and orchestra on the same piece (though chorus had already been used before for One Winged Angel)

And going with everlasting, amazing main themes, there's also the main theme of Metal Gear Solid 2 for the PS2, which is absolutely fantastic:

Can't really think of any meaningful third OST that pushed a system to its limits.

2.-

Birth of a God, in Final Fantasy VII. This one generally gets extremely overshadowed by every single other battle theme, and it doesn't help that it comes right before One Winged Angel, but it's absolutely superb.

Persona 4's Corridor provides a much welcomed change of pace in terms of music, especially how vibrant everything else is. I rarely ever see anyone talking about this particular piece.

We'll be dead in Ten, from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Rarely I see people discussing Call of Duty's ost, and generally Modern Warfare 2 take reign over those. Coupled with the fact that people generally go traditional with escape osts (think Warthog Run from Halo), it's a shame that this particular piece is always so largely ignored, as it is probably the best one I've heard as far as making a desperate escape goes. It fit so incredible well while playing, and it's so damn great listening to it even without context:

3.-

If I have a profile page and I want people to feel welcomed, I guess we can go with something like The Fragance of Dark Coffee, from Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations. In this case I'd add the jazz version, for extra edge in the taste:

4.-

For no particular reason, Shadowlord from original Nier.

Maybe should have explained it better. I am talking about music that is exceptional in terms of what most music sounded like on said system. Unusually good with the sound capablities given. Does that make sense? Otherwise, i'll just adjust it.

Also, very cool choices. True FF fan I see.

Absolutely love the jazz theme.

Nier has one of the best soundtracks of all time.

This will always be the best video game song, and it's one of the only video game songs that's actually among my favorite songs in general.
