Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo wants more "mature" content on the switch

They could make an AAA Eternal Darkness instead of a niche one.

Yeah, they could but it would honestly be easier to make a game from a genre that has both mainstream appeal and the ability to act as an entry point to many of the games that 3rd party developers make.

Fair enough. A semi-horror game with a strong story (like The Last of Us) would be cool.

I actually wanted to make a thread about this

I hope these games are good first and mature second.

I think this could be a little bit of a turn away from the Iwata-era and back towards the Yamauchi-Lincoln-Arakawa era of the 1990s (specifically 1995-2002).

Nintendo I think may realize that while being labelled a "family" company has benefits, it narrows their appeal and there needs to be a better balance.

Kimishima and some of the younger guys at Nintendo with new higher up positions may have attitudes on this that are a little different to Iwata + Miyamoto who IMO steered the company a bit too hard to being family oriented.

It also just makes sense, Switch is a device that can appeal to PS4/XB1/PC owners as well, it's not neccessarily in competetion with them in the same way. It's a hardcore portable gaming device that can run things like Zelda and Skyrim.

N64 had quite a selection of mature titles that sold well.

Yeah I mean back in those days stuff like Turok 1/2/3, South Park 64, wrestling games, things like San Fransico Rush, Perfect Dark, etc. sold well on N64 along with Star Wars games, sports games (NBA Courtside, NFL Quarterback Club, Ken Griffey Jr. MLB), even some turds like Mission: Impossible put up good sales.

I think if you're Nintendo it's not just about selling Switch systems, it's about changing the ecosystem so it's not just Mario/Pokemon/Zelda/Animal Crossing and then scraps for everyone else.

they should make one themselves.
I imagine nintendo separating a team to develop a mature mainstream game every 2 years, why not?
And why not get some licenses? imagine something like that ps4 spiderman game on ths switch? Why not have their own nintendo developed forza/horizon/GT/need? or their own cod/battlefield? or even something like infamous?
They are owning much money, time to invest in bold projects.

Splatoon was pretty bold. Most people didn't think much of it at first, but look who's covered in ink now.

Since they've been tight with Ubisoft...
