Forums - Nintendo - How will we preserve DS/3DS on Switch?

So i'm sure we all want to see Nintendo release a fully-featured virtual console. One that encapsulates almost every must have game for every one of their consoles. I never thought this would happen this early, since the SNES classic was releasing. But I have been thinking about virtual console a lot recently.

For a majority of Nintendo's consoles, emulating a control method similar to the original console should be easy. Even with the odd controls of the gamecube and Nintendo 64. NES, Gameboy, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gameboy Advance, and Gamecube should all be easy. We start seeing problems with the Wii, because of the lack of a pointer on the Joycons and Pro Controller for the Switch. Although advancements in gyro controls, as well as the fact that joycons and pro controllers feel a lot more natural in your hands, would allow developers to theoretically emulate pointer controls with gyro controls .... maybe ... we'll see on that one. With the Wii U, the downside of the console during it's lifespan was the lack of proper use of the Gamepad. The plus side is, post lifespan, it should be easy to take the biggest Wii U games and port them to the Switch with ease. We've already seen this with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Pokken Tournament DX. Even with games that heavily use the gamepad, it should be easy enough to allocate those features(like maps) to the controller.

But .. what about the DS/3DS? What about their killer apps? Could those, with ease, be ported to the Switch? What about games that almost entirely rely on the dual screen functionality? With the Wii U, the console never took off as a dual screen device, so it's games never took advantage of it. But with the DS and 3DS, there were games that in fact did.

Does this mean that certain Nintendo games will not be able to be on the virtual console due to the unique designs of those consoles? Will Nintendo have to forget games from their history for the sake of simplicity? What way can you see DS and 3DS games coming to virtual console? Obviously a lot of these games would just require a slight adjustment - but there's certainly games that would require a lot of work, or would be nearly impossible on a VC.

What do you guys think? How can we preserve DS and 3DS games on Switch VC?

Something like this could work well.

The Switch screen is big enough for the DS games to work on the side. Maybe they would recomend you to play on portable rather than docked, to allow the touch part to work.  I really want to see Etrian Odyssey games ported to the Switch like these.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

3DS games will likely never be seen in 3D after the 3DS line dies. It will be more like the 2DS.

There are a number of DS games on the Wii U eshop. I had that brain academy game for "reasons"...They handle it by holding the gamepad sideways and the two screen are separated by a black bar between them. They also had the option of holding the gamepad normally where the two screens are side by side. The Switch pretty much is just an updated gamepad anyways and could very well do the same.

Yes we do lose the stylus (under you buy a separate capacitive stylus), but a majority of both DS and 3DS games were easily able to use your finger.

I was gonna point you to looking at Android-based DS emulators, but Hiku beat me to it...

Not all games would work well in a side by side method. Contra 4 comes to mind.

Around the Network

you know, they could just release a 3DS successor.

If you hold the switch vertically the screen is roughly the size of a both screens of a DS/3DS...

Not that I think it's necessary, but the same way the Wii U did it?

Well duh, I know those exist. But what about in docked mode?

Again, what about in docked mode?

So you hold the console vertically? Thats ... very very awkward xD

The fuck is that? I thought the Wii U displayed the bottom DS screen on the gamepad and the top on the screen for the DS emulation. That just looks awkward ... and I don't think that game requires the same level of touch controls?
