I just played the beta with a controller, it feels weird. Unlike GT, unlike any of the sims of recent years, unlike the arcade racers. I like it but I'm afraid to whip out my wheel for it as I think it's all going to fall apart after that, If I had to compare it to anything, my first impressions were correct, it's like a GT/japanese version of Project cars with a new take on how the cars feel around corners and tracks with not much texture however it works somehow, It's not going for realism but a balance between it and arcadeness like always with GT.

One thing is for sure, this is the prettiest racing game on console hands down. one of the best looking games on ps4 too even on the OG and the system menus and some parts of the interface have a very nostalgic GT feeling to them. Right down to the AFK cutscenes and slideshows.

AND THE MUSIC! WOW. So GT. And they finally fixed the cars sounds to some degree, they aren't supurb (some are) however it's such a drastic improvement over gt5 and 6 this deserves praise. I take back much of what I said before release, it's not the disaster I thought it would be. I'll def be getting it, not right away but I will pick it up first month.

There's much to be disappointed with here, bouncy car collision, flat tracks, not much visual damage, Always online, no dynamic day night cycle or weather, not much of a single player aspect (hoping this is just the beta) and so on..

I'll update this after i spend two or three hours with my wheel tonight.

EDIT:I'm really finding it hard to determine how to approach the AI, the bouncy car collision can ruin a lap as if i'm in a corner and someone sneaks up on me I'm more afraid of getting bounced into a wall rather than the AI taking my place. I can seen this leading into real shitlord tactics online.

I initially had problems with the default controller settings as well. It somehow felt as if the dead zone was considerably too wide, so after I had upped the force feedback to max ( which still feels a little bit too weak due to the DS4s weak rumble motors) I upped the controller sensitivity quite a bit which perfectly solved the problem.

Now I was able to drive the M4 around pulling long drifts with a big smile on my face. Haha I find the game loads of fun, it just feels great and just looks incredible. Honestly, even on my base PS4 I’d have problems to even find a game on PC that looks close to that at the same resolution...hell, even higher resolutions, it just looks so life like at times, nearly photorealistic. Incredible they can do this with 1.8 TF and a 6 year old laptop CPU.

The physics have made a huge step up. I’ve even heard several guys, even PC sim people compare it to pC2 and AC, saying it feels pretty close with a wheel. Sadly didn’t have a chance to try one yet. They even said one could really call it a sim now, at least physic wise. Just a little bit more forgivable, which actually mirrors my own impression.

The bouncy bumper physics are my main gripe as well though. It feels very GT though, so not sure if they’ll touch that.

The music is indeed amazing...it feels more modern and sophisticated this time, just like the amazingly slick UI, museum, scapes, Brand Central and the whole presentation. Those classic GT sound effects still bath me in nostalgia all the time and make me feel like a little boy...haha..The whole game just has a certain elegance and soul all other racers lack. It’s pure car porn for sure.

I’m actually not too bothered by the lack of a classic GT mode. There seem to be a lot of additional missions in the full game and Im fine with generating my own events..I just wish they’d add possibilities to further customise those, like creating series of races, more specific car selection outside groups etc.

I actually kinda like that new approach, to thoroughly educate the driver before he can fully embrace the online mode. It’s somehow more sophisticated and challenging than the old system.

Generally for the online I think it’s a good tactic to be as prepared as possible to be able to on do one of the best qualifying laps, in order to gain more experience, money and having less trouble with less skilled players at the end of the pack. One really has to be careful not to ruin one’s reputation.

What bothers me though is the online only saving...that’s atrocious and simply can’t be allowed. I’m sure they are already working on a patch.

Concerning the weather....I’m sure you’ve noticed there are not just rain and snow tires in the game, but also functioning wipers and a wet road. Meaning we’ll see if weather is already implemented in the game and they just kept it a secret (ev it’s just not dynamic) or if it will be implemented at a later time, like they did with GT5 if I remember right.

All in all I can’t wait for the full game and hope they update the game with a few more tracks and cars soon. It’s a great foundation and I actually think it’s the best feeling and most fun GT I’ve ever played. Even the best racing game in over a decade or so. It just feels and looks so good..I’m  kinda in love, even the sound is good now..who’d have thunk.

I played some more, getting gold on stage 6. It really does look great in HDR (now I've got the settings right). The handling is great, counter steering can be a bit tricky in the rally car, otherwise it's all very smooth. I also had a chance to put the volume up, the cars sound great this time, same as all the sound effects, passing cars, rumble strips, gravel hitting the rally car, very immersive.

The only downside is the AI. It's behavior is not growing on me, the opposite. I did the Interlagos challenge again, first a flawless race, this time the German decided to stubbornly stay in front of me. Second attempt I easily passed him in lap 4 for first, then the AI completely drove me off road against the wall in the first chicane, I dropped to 6 thinking the race was over. Caught up and won without much trouble... A bit of randomness is fine, yet this doesn't feel right, winning with a much slower total time. Perhaps the AI felt bad....

I also did an online race. Online races only start every 20 minutes, just missed it so had to run qualifying laps for 15 minutes for a 3 lap race doh. Matchmaking doesn't have much to work with yet so inevitably some idiot was behind me who rammed me off road. Expected, yet why is my SR (sportmanships rating) going down when I get rammed and then again when pushed off road? He continued to do the same to the person who was in front of me. I blocked him on psn, dunno if that affects matchmaking, it better... Penalty system seems broken. In the result screen only the person in pole position who never got touched had a green SR rating.

Anyway seems for online I'll have to change my driving style again. I prefer slow in fast out, yet online the only way to go is to brake late or get rammed :/ Then still get used as a bumper, so cut the corner as well to prevent that ugh. Hopefully it will sort itself out after a while.

So I saved the 30 Lap endurance for tonight, as a last bit of enjoyment until the wait for the full release and VR. Going incredible, I have a 7+ second lead over T. Simon in lap 27. I set new marks for fast laps in 28 and 29 and somehow he has closed the gap, and now sits right on my tail. Go into turn 4 on the final lap and he cuts it inside, and rides my right rear quarter panel until he spins me out into the wall, and finally coming to a stop at nose first into the green barricade on the right. I have to back up and get going again. Ended up finishing 14 seconds behind in 1:03.59.

Still really enjoyed the rest of the race, but this kind of crap is not something I wanted from GT. It is like I am playing Motorstorm with how bad the rubberbanding is happening. I have no doubt this is going to be the case for the rest of the Campaign, and as I said before, I see this becoming a serious grind.

I have not touched the Sport mode, but I am hoping as I raise my ratings, I will be able to get into non bumper car races, and not have to deal with the A.I. after I complete the rest of the challanges.

Aside from this issue, I am very happy with what we have here. I still think that a racing sim on the TV is an outdated expereince, but it still does have its charms. I see myself spending a lot of time with this game regaurdless. Really looking forward to the VR Tour, and can't wait to see new tracks and cars added each month.

Now the wait for the 17th:(

Hi there, first time poster, I generally only read stuff on here but I thought I'd share my opinion on this.

Gotta say I'm mixed and will probably wait for a price drop.

I'm playing on a base PS4 and a 50" inch 1080p TV and graphically I think it looks a bit rough. The backgrounds seem rather flat and dull, the trees were kinda crappy looking and whats with the lack of AA on the BMW M4? The jaggies on that car stick out like a sore thumb and you can literally count the pixels on its front grille.

I did the Oval track in the Merc AMG GT at night and it looked MUCH better but was let down a bit by the stuttery framerate.

Gameplay wise I liked it, the cars felt good to drive although I think it lacked a sense of speed even at 150+ mph.

Here's my thoughts. I woke up today, eager to download the demo myself, only to find out that they locked it behind a paywall (not paying for PSN at the moment). Dick move and ridiculously counterproductive.

You want to stress test the network? You want to do deep data mining on a mass of players? Make the demo available to as many people as possible.

Common sense... it's a thing.

It should be available to non PS+ subscribers tonight. As far as I understood, it was just pre-download, and early access for PS+ subscribers.

Yeah... I found that out YESTERDAY when I logged in lol. I really enjoyed the demo but I had no idea that there's no traditional career mode. Alot of people are going to pass on the game because of that. Otherwise, it seems brilliant.

I did the endurance raise again for punishment I guess. I got spun out by the AI trying to pass me about 6 or 7 times, half the time I could recover other times backwards against a wall. The rubberbanding is ridiculous. The driving is excellent, yet the AI is ruining it. After the final pit stop, I immediately got pushed off road 3 times in a row. Still due to rubberbanding I got in the lead again, only to be taken out half a lap later by the magic speed up of the car behind me. Then in the final lap I was back in pos 3, nr 2 car veers into my path on the fast corner where you can make up time, just clipped him, not even a bump, 10 sec penalty, nevermind. To add insult to injury another car out of nowhere takes me out in the final corner.

It looks pretty but I hope VR brings some way to progress because I don't see myself bothering much with the challenges if the AI stays like this. bring back the drone AI of GT5, anything is better than this.

I lucked out that I didn't had to pass the same hassle than you guys.

But perhaps the game is teaching you that on online there will be guys hunting your tails =]

As I said earlier to Svennoj, the way to go on the challenges seems to do early breaking when you want to pass (so you don't risk a late breaking, passing and them have the AI hitting you) and late breaking when avoiding being past (or very early breaking while closing the door to be completely sure the AI won't be able to pass you, this is how some F1 racers do to make sure they take out the wind of the car behind).

I was worried about that first but the new campaign plus the online plus everything else you can do in single player and the new progression system which makes you develop all the time, whatever you're doing, makes for up for it imho. If anything it's a more flexible and modern take on the same thing. It's a sad thing it seems a lot of people seem to have prejudices and didn't even try it before writing it off.

Btw did you guys know that PS+ isn't even needed to play the game online?! I'm sure a lot of people think it is.

Couldn't agree more. After playing the demo, I think this is actually the best single player we have had in a Gran Turismo. You have the ability to make your own races, and progress as you see fit. No more running the Sunday Cup or Clubman Cup on the same track over and over. Now you can set up a race at any level, against a pack of your choosing, on the track of your choice, at the time you want, and the amount of laps you want. Does it get any better than that?

Perhapps, because now that miles are a currency, you can even turn a Time Attack session into a progress. This means I can take the Viper on any track, at any time, and spend hours learning shift points and breaking points, while racking up a ton of milage to spend on cars, upgrades, and such. This is a major game changer for me, and as they get more cars and real life tracks, I will be doing a lot of this to build out my garage, and practice for when I take my real cars out for the real deal.

So, yeah, I definitly think this is the best single player Gran Turismo to date, and I think people will take a liking to it very quickly.

I guess the game is trying to teach me to ignore the driving line and stay close to the side of the apex while entering the corner, then go wide accelerating out. The problem with the AI is that it nudges up to your inside in the corner against the back of your car, which causes the spin out. I don't know if that's a valid move in motorsport, maybe it is. Pretty shitty though. Basically the AI does as I'm suggesting which intersects with the path of any car taking the corner in a proper way. If your inside the pack that's what will happen when you fend of the AI behind you, you'll be hitting the car in front.

But true, that's what people do online, using you as their guard rail to get around a corner. Which requires the same solution, be on the opposite side of the driving line when entering the corner to keep the door closed. Ofcourse you won't be making up any time to the car in front.

Late braking didn't help, the AI still used me as a bumper unless I go off track on the corner exit. One of the challenges I had enough of the AI and did the same to them which worked really well as it always has. Using cars to get around corners is something I wanted gone from GT. Funny thing, I did get big penalties for driving like an ass, yet those don't count for completing the challenge. I was officially in 3rd after the penalties, still got gold for passing the finish line first. I thought GT Sport was supposed to teach good driving!
