Forums - Gaming - "Dark Souls is Not Hard"

It's not compared to NES hard. Souls are NES games on easy mode. One of my buddies as a game designer says the same thing they are not hard, but I think it's not hard for those that 100% understand the design and know the timing windows. Some people beat those games without leveling without dodging or rolling. My impatience would get the best of me in Soulsborne games personally. NES games it's more about quick reactions and while not the hardest of NES games but still damn hard Ninja Gaiden series I feel you need some of the quickest reflexes.

I agree with the guy when he said that Dark Souls/Bloodborne teaches you about being aware of your surroundings.

And I think that's the key with the Souls/Blood series, they are not necessarily hard, but they do require a lot of patience. Rushing to attack an enemy will most likely result in your death, and the general tone of the game is slow paced. Most modern action games don't require patience (unless you are playing on a higher difficulty or something like that), you can, for the most part, rush and kill everything in your way. Dark Souls/Bloodborne changes the formula a bit by forcing the player to be more thoughtful, think about your moves and know when to attack; and people that are not patient find these games difficult and frustrating.

I played Nioh.... which I assume is very similar to Dark Souls. It's very challenging but using tactics will ensure you success. This should be the same for the Souls series. Haedox makes good points... but I can't stand his videos because his voice is so fucking stilted and he always sounds bored. I want to be able to into them but I just can't.

I Agree. The ninja Gainden nes series, Battletoads, 100 % in Binding of Isaac, any bullet hell was more dificult,  this is realy hard.  Dark Souls is tought, but not hard. If you understand the design of Souls Series, you might prevail.

Do the Souls games not have difficulty options?

Sounds rather elitist. Hard....is challenging. I play most of my games on hard because I want to be challenged. hes trying to act like the terms aren't interchangeable.

Not really elitist at all? I think the title of the video is dumb but he's basically saying Dark Souls isn't *just* hard, it's more then that. How does that sound elitist?

As he said, the term is subjective...but the marketing campaign was indicitive of the difficulty of that which most who obtained the game were about to face. Most people knew that they were going to rage come hell or high water. Some people adapted better than others, but some people just pay attention more than others do. It doesnt mean the game isnt hard. If somethings harder you must challenge yourself to adapt to said difficulty. LOL To take away the idea that the game isnt intentionally hard (which it is for most) is to say that anyone who wants to try the game is fooling themselves for not accepting the challenge for themselves or wanting to be challenged in general.

When one says dark souls is not hard they are definitely speaking subjectively. Its a fact that the games mechanics were created for a desired effect...making it challenging or hard.

I've often thought about checking out the series. But, it doesn't seem like quite my style, and I don't feel like dealing with extreme difficulty in a game that only half appeals to me to start with.....

I guess I should just not be a little bitch and give one a try.

I don't get how you got that from the video ... like I said the video is titled terribly and the Haedox didn't do the best job of connecting his two points, but he's just saying that the games are about more than just difficulty, and that the difficulty is used to communicate that fact. You're not actually saying anything against him, you're agreeing with him. It's just an awfully titled video.

If someone said Dark Souls is not hard I wouldn't think that's elitist

If someone said Dark Souls is not hard LOL, in like a forum environment where someone is talking about the difficulty, probably elitist yeah.

The difficulty is extreme at first but it's a lot more about learning how to play the game. Kind of like a difficulty curve rather than just flat out difficulty? I definitely rage more at game series that aren't meant to be difficult than Dark Souls, lol. I think Breath of the Wild is harder than Dark Souls (jk ... but you could compare them)

It kind of sucks because the newer games like DS2 or DS3 are flat out unfair in some parts(mostly 2, which is unfair a lot of the time, but 3 has it's moments) whereas DS1 is almost consistently fair, bare a few parts. I think Bloodborne would be the best introduction if you only have this gen of consoles.
