Forums - Nintendo - Gamesindustry.biz: The Nintendo Switch Indie gold rush

I have gone crazy with picking up new games on the Switch, to the point where I can't keep up. It's just that I want all these indie games rather on the Switch than any other platform. I can't be the only one.

Same boat.

I've picked up more indie titles (a little over 20-25ish) on the Switch than my PS4 and PC combined...I'm not one to pick up many indie titles but something about the Switch and portability makes me want to pick up these smaller games. PC I usually pick up the "big" AAA titles when they get heavy discounted on Steam, GOG, etc. PS4 I pick up maybe 2-3 highly hyped games or so a year (since lot of games I don't care for mostly the FPS ones (outside of Destiny)) and everything else is through PS+.

Indies games have never felt right to me on home consoles. They're generally too low in budget for the big screen for me, especially for more 2D or simplistic 3D indies. The Switch is the only home console I've bought an indie game for and that's just because it happens to be a handheld as well.

Besides the obvious fact that the WiiU and Switch (so far) have sparse game libraries, a lot of Indie games feel right at home on Nintendo platforms, because of their genre. It's a shame that some games like a Hat in Time aren't coming to Switch at their launch to being developed in the transitional WiiU-Switch era.

I agree. Just something off putting some 8-bit, 16-bit game on some 60"+ screen. Heck if I want to plug back in an old system, like the nes or something and play say turtles in time, I want to plug into some 27" tube tv. Just feels right. I have only been buying indies on pc, cause I can have it on a side monitor while other stuff is going on. I have a hard time committing some big fancy tv screen's whole real estate to a indie game. I do have many indies on handheld devices such as 3ds though. So they seem to feel good on the go too, or the small screen.

But then also, people bring up nostalgia for Nintendo games all the time, but many of these indie games sure do bring up nostalgia by having them on the go. Just take Sonic Mania for example. Who here above the age of 30 doesn't get huge Game Gear vibes when seeing that thing on the Switch. It's worth getting on that system alone for that. Nostalgia whether you like it or not improves ones game experience. It's like smelling a familiar scent, or eating somethign that reminds you of home, ect. Your memories make that experience/food better.

There are plenty of very good looking indie 3D games that benefit from better hardware. And there are plenty of people who don't care at all for handhelds and like to play on big screen - i.e., I play my games (unfortunately, still) HD projected on 3 meter wide woven acoustic screen.

I think I've caught a bug: any game with cute girls almost always gets me to pick it up.

That Touhou game looks interesting.

But Ryu from this forum told me third party games don't sell well on Switch!

The switch indie train will last for quite some time. Eventually, it'll be seen as normal due to people preferring to get these games on the go.

Indie games and Nintendo games have something in common: They're different in some ways (some more, some less) to what the mainstream games offer. In this, it's just normal that they thrive on a Nintendo platform, as apart from a few multiplats the whole experience is (trimmed to in some respect) different from the mainstream.

Since the days of the WiiWare I thought Indies & Nintendo are a perfect combination due to this. And it seems like I was right. While The Wii U in itself flopped, the fact that there where basically no multiplat titles aside from Skylanders, Just dance and Lego meant that Indies had much more spotlight and quite often Wii U versions of Indie games outsold the Versions on other consoles due to this. With Nintendo continuing their Nindies Programm they ensure that that spotlight will never vanish completly, and with the reasons told above indies should have a bright future on the console.
