I guess realistically we're too close to release to get another resolution bumb to 1080 or even 1080 dynamic resolution, but I'm pretty happy with 900p as well.

DF says SMO has the hallmarks of a game truly developed for Switch, as opposed to WiiU ports, but I still think it's likely that it started out as a WiiU game. Obviously it wasn't nearly as far along in development as Zelda was when they decided to drop WiiU support and they might have scrapped most of the work done and completely started fresh for the Switch version, in wich case it makes little technical diffrence how it started out I guess.

Anyone know wich engine it is using? 3D worlds, MK8s (is that the same engine, even) or Unreal 4?
Two (one...?) of those are (is a..?) WiiU engine(s) and although it has been shown that MK8s engine rins beautifully on the Switch with ARMS and MK8D I wonder what the technical implications are.

The team behind Odyssey finished Super Mario 3D World in November 2013. Iwata was convinced of Wii U's failure in January 2014. There's simply no reason to believe that Odyssey started as a Wii U game. Parts of the SM3DW team worked on Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, but the rest was already building for Nintendo's next console.

Fair enough. The timeline was less tight in my head.

No higher praise possible.

I dont think they thought Wii U is failure in January 2014. and that really doesn't matter, I mean we got lotsa big games after January 2014. so its very possible they started next 3D Mario like Wii U project, they definitely had lots a time to do that.

Yes, that's strange statement, game doesn't look at all to me like Mario Galaxy 3.

Docked: 900p 60fps with slightly more enhanced visuals than undocked

Undocked: 720p 60fps with slightly less enhanced visuals than docked

Maybe its because I've got a 4k tv but its often hard to tell the difference between the ps4 at 1080p and xbox one at 900p on a lot of games or the difference is so marginal I just don't care. I guess viewing distance is a factor though and how the tv upscales. However 720p is noticably softer even from a distance. I'd probably have to stand outside looking in the window for that to look sharp.

Awesome to see them using the docked mode's speed boost to improve other graphics settings apart from just resolution. I reckon 900p was the right choice here in order to allow for richer visuals over raw pixel count. No AA during gameplay is disappointing, considering it represents a downgrade in this respect compared to 3D World on Wii U, but it's not a deal breaker.

Overall though, I'd say this is the best looking game on Switch so far, and the fact it runs at 60fps to boot is the icing on the cake.

Can we please just get the game? I'll play it on the Wii at 480p for god's sake

Nice, 60fps is great to have

900p is sufficient. I was worried it would be 720p docked, which would look hideous on my 4k television with its crappy upscaler, but so far the games I've played at 900p have been decent if I am far away from the TV.

I'm kind of surprised it's not a dynamic resolution, given a lot of Nintendo's Switch titles have opted for this approach. Maybe between now and release they'll implement this, so that it bottoms out at 900p but goes higher when there's extra headroom. If it does, I called it.

Still, if this is the final product, that's fine by me.
