Forums - Gaming - Superbosses are a good thing.

So, I've seen a lot of reviewers for Xenoblade Chronicles games complain because they were in a level 10 area, and a level 70 monster came around and squished them like a bug. They always state how frustrating the experience can be, and that it isn't fair. Personally, I love things like this in games. It makes the game feel more alive and real. These bosses  are purposefully overleveled as a gameplay element. Part of the game is being aware of your surroundings and making sure you aren't ambushed by high level monsters. The Etrian Odyssey series takes this concept to great heights with F.O.E.s, giant superbosses that hunt down your party, and must be avoided at all costs to  complete a dungeon. Part of the fun of the game, is using stealth tactics to avoid being caught by these F.O.E.s until your party is at a higher level. Another example of the Superboss is the survival horror trope, where you must run from a monster that is invincible. Do you see people complaining about how Survival horror games have these unfair bosses? No. That's because everybody understands that those bosses aren't something to fight. The challenge is escaping them.  It's part of the horror aspect of those games.

I like a mix of higher level of enemies with normal ones in a area with rpgs. It makes it possible the grind quicker for an area or gives ya access to better stuff. Plus it gives ya some incentive to get stronger.

I agree, but only until the F.O.E. destroys my entire party because I didn't prepare properly.

I WON A BET AGAINST AZUREN! WOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

:3

As long as the boss makes sense, sure. Usually having a level 70 boss in a beginner area doesn't make much sense but if it does, I don't see why it would be a bad thing.

If there's a way to avoid the encounter until you're strong enough, then I can't see any problem.

If it's the very first area, I think they should avoid that to let people be comfortable with the game.

Otherwise, it shouldn't be an issue if one can avoid it

I very much disagree. Optional superbosses are a great thing. If you accidentally stumble upon them, or rub something that you shouldn't be rubbing just yet... then sure an overpower boss is a pretty cool secret. But having them just roaming round in areas they shouldn't be (or worse actively following you as you said in the OP), is just an incredibly frustrating thing. And FYI I think those kind of bosses are shit in survival horror games too. I like strong enemies, but it should be within your means to overcome them, it shouldn't be impossible until a certain point much much further in the game.

I think Dying Light is a good example here. The night zombies in that (can't remember their name) were very tough enemies and encouraged you to run, but if you did stand and fight you did have a chance (even at low levels) providing you didn't take on too many at once and you were careful.

i just ran from those things or used night vision to avoid them. ugh.. Those things sucked but were alot of fun. It made moving around at night a real challenge. What did you think of The Witcher 3 in terms of this thread? You could easily get into fights with things that were a lot stronger than ya.

They really were fun! I avoided them at first, but playing co-op with my bro we just said "let's see if we can take them on" and for awhile we did. Had to get out of there before we were overwhelmed, but being able to successfully hold them off for awhile, while still being a challenge, made them much more of a fun enemy.

Dunno if you were asking me or the thread generally... but I've not played The Witcher so can't answer anyway

I never played any co-op in that game so I guess running around at night would be a different experience with someone else. I could kill a few before I would have to run from them.  It was hell of an andrenaline rush though.

I was asking you because the zones/areas in the witcher 3 have patches of enemies that can be alot stronger than you. I guess they set it up so that as you go through the quests, there would be enemies that would be a challenge to you or outright slaugher you. If you're the type that likes to explore, you'd run into the stronger ones alot. I kinda liked that set up. Early on in the game, people would kill the kills to farm for alot of money quickly. The devs added a very high creature that would kill you if you used that eploit. It was really funny. Why haven't you played the witcher 3?

I like Super Bosses, just not Super Bosses that are HP punching bags.

The old reason in the book! Too many games and not enough time to play them all

lol Best excuse ever.
