News just in, all black people are rappers.

I'm joking I know that's not what you meant, but not all black people, say 'Nigga' I don't know how many you're actually close to but saying that black people say it all the time is a clear sign that you don't actually hang around with a lot of black people.

Even if someone does, it's similar to 'i can hit my little brother but if you do I'll kill you'

Okay, go ahead and stretch my point out till it seems as ridiculous as possible : ) You either didn't get the memo at all or need to learn what an "example" is

It doesn't matter if a rapper uses it, or if a black person uses it. It's just an example. The point is the context. If people are able to listen to a black person say  nigga, or say the N word with a hard R, and in a lot of scenarios aren't offended due to context, they should be able to understand that a streamer screaming it when getting upset isn't racism due to the context. Are we really going to pretend like context isn't important? It absolutely is. Believing that doesn't mean I don't hang out with black people or have a limited experience with them. Anecdotal evidence is hardly good anyways, and I don't count people as examples for my argument but rather as people. What Pewdiepie said wasn't right in the context of society, but I don't think he's racist, or a bad person for saying it.

Or just completely ignore the fact I said I was joking about the rapper thing.. I repeat, 'im joking I know that's not what you meant', jeez man read properly or you'll just make yourself look silly.

Pewdiepie is definitely not racist, I'd bet a lot of money on that being true, but the whole some black people use it in a context doesn't mean using the hard r when mad at a game is that context.

We all get angry but we don't all say Nigger, also its a video game, we all here enjoy video games but it's not even 'real' anger. It'd be interesting to hear what he'd say when he's actually really angry.

I don't agree with you. I suppose you weren't personally insulted with racial slurs because of where you are coming from. I don't think they are weaken down the more you say it.

I think they are. Look at what words are completely normal now that would have been scandalous just 30 years ago. If you use a word often enough it completely loses its power and sometimes even loses or changes its meaning.

Sadly in today's society we kinda see a reverse trend of that with people giving more and more power to words to appeal to their peers. Words are only powerful because people say they are, making them even more powerful. Nigger isn't even really a word anymore but a mere trigger or talking point. People use it to offend in the general sense and rarely for its actual meaning. If people stop being offended by it it will completely lose its power and people will move on to other words.

But it seems people just don't want to let go. The word nigger has become the strongest tool for both sides because of that. It's an arms race that nobody wins.

This goes both ways, then. Instead of using the word too much to weaken the meaning it, you would risk the creation of new slurs. Just like you said. So, what's the point? It starts all over again.

But the usage of your vocabulary also points to the society you are in and with what kind of people you interact. I know that certain words exist. We all do. But I for instance wouldn't use them ever on people from where ever the come from. That's simply not who I am.

In pewdiepie's case, he is giving a hint that he could use the word in different situations. Otherwise he wouldn't say it.

I also curse when I am angry, but I don't throw slurs at others.

No it wouldn't.

OK, tell me the impact it would have on you and I'll share what impact it would have on me

I think the word itself sounds pretty funny.

I wasn't mad at you making a joke, tbh my reply was too heated. I'm sorry. I guess I get overly upset, because even if I don't really care about pewdiepie, I also wonder how I would feel if I was put in this situation. Regardless, I don't think the "you must not hang around many black people" thing was necessary.

And of course the context isn't the same, that wasn't my point. Simply that, people should look into context more before judging people. People don't jump the gun when certain people say it, they shouldn't jump the gun when context clearly provides a logical(even if it still wrong) reason why the word wasn't used as a racist slur.

Meh, I don't speak when i'm angry usually. I imagine if I did I might eventually shout expletives. Hang around people long enough and nigger might become one of them.

Dont worry about it man, but I think it's necessary because it does add to the context of the situation. People who don't have any close black friends have a certain view and it's not really their fault, they just don't know.

For example ask any black person the amount of times they've heard that they 'dont really act that black' and you'd be surprised at the responses aha.

In this context though as we've kind of concluded Pewdiepie isnt a racist but imo the context isn't extreme enough to warrant saying it when it's just a video game.

Oh boy....

Sure the word can sound funny, I get that, but it's a word that has been (and still is) used to belittle or demean lgbt people. The Austrailian campaign against marriage equality is using the word to turn the public against this group in a cruel and hateful way, linking them to pedophiles or child abuse.  People were called "faggots" or "niggers" as they were beaten up or even murdered for characteristics they had no say over. It's a way that "others" people and makes it ok to bully or hurt them.

I'm not saying PewDiePie meant it in a way that was to belittle or harm black people, I acknowledge it was an accident. But it's still wrong, and as much as we can say words only have as much power as we give them, it doesn't take away their historical significance or impact they have on groups it affects. If you wanna say the words, I can't stop you, but public figures/celebrities should be heald to a reasonable standard to be more mindful of the words they choose and what influence they have on others

I think everyone knows the history of the n or f word by now. No one is ignoring that. My problem with your idea is that your original post pretty much says "You can't defend this if you aren't black. How man you you have been called a mean name before? Also, as a community it's our responsibility to censo - i mean moderate what figure heads said".

Derailing it to "Do you know how offensive faggot can be in a certain context?" doesn't really back up anything you said. What context you use a word in completely changes whether or not it's adhering to a historical value. If I said nigger to a black person they wouldn't automatically recieve it as a black slave would, they would have to judge whether to base it on the context and go from their(although this really isn't a good example because I don't think saying it directly to someone ever is almost ever safe, but you get the point)(actually this example is really bad i just can't think of anything else right now oops). Historical value for words is actually very limited because words naturally change over time, and as such the ways they are used. In fact saying "fag" could even have a good historical value, if you just want to adhere to old definitions.
