Forums - Nintendo - "Switch is doing great because it's handheld"

I am kind of speechless that people are being defensive over this, of all things. It's like getting angry because someone says that being a home console helps the PS4 in North America.

The amusing thing is that pretty much every multiplat thread made on these forums is quickly filled with comments like, "I want the Switch version so I can play on the go."

Is portability a major advantage to selling well in Japan? Yes, it is. Is being a portable Nintendo console a major advantage to selling well in Japan? Yes, it is. I'm sorry, I know that's a bitter pill to swallow.

As far as the 3DS goes, that was obviously over-priced and everyone knew it from the start. The hardware was not worth the price and the gimmick obviously was not. I also seem to remember only die-hard Nintendo fans getting excited over it's launch games. The situations are not identical.

The difference here is that portability is a factor, not the sole offering. People claiming the Switch is a handheld are locking it into the handheld category for their own reasons, not because its "portability is a major advantage." The Switch is both a home console and a handheld. Nintendo even considers it their home console, but one with handheld properties.

The PS4 comparison is not one-in-the-same because the PS4 is only a home console and nothing else.

That just sounds like political correctness and defensiveness taken to an extreme.  I can't even believe that this is an argument.

So because I took the time to explain why being part handheld benefits the Switch in a country where handhelds dominate, I'm a problem, right?

And it couldn't be that you're just biased in favor of Nintendo. Forget the ingenious marketing strategy of having your cake and eating it too that the Switch embodies between the handheld and home markets. It's clear that Nintendo didn't actually think that through thoroughly and just released a hybrid console for shits and giggles.

Well, you actually aren't that much of a problem. But you engage in downplaying/light trolling and you have a guilty conscience despite being more the playful/lighthearted type, because there's an ounce of seriousness in your posts.

Downplaying? I've gone on two tangents in less than four hours about how Nintendo's strategy with the Switch was genius. I'm currently holding onto $300 for the next time a Red/Blue model comes through my store. What more do you want from me to prove that my comments about switch are, at worst, playful jabs?

Um... you don't need to prove a conclusion that I've already drawn.

You say I should have a guilty conscience because there's an ounce of seriousness. What seriousness makes you think I should feel guilty?

I mean, it IS true.

Nothing wrong with that. Nintendo is good at handhelds, and the Switch covers the handheld part perfectly.

Nothing wrong, but like your wrote, Switch covers handheld part, but it also covers home console part in same time, and that's actually biggest Switch advantage, that's real handheld and real home console in one.

It is a Nintablet that you can carry around and play on the go, and I'll say that is the #1 selling factor, #2 is whatever you want it to be.

You should edit this thread and make it like: "the best reasons why Switch is doing great" and add this one for the OP.

"Switch is doing great because Nintendo is holding stock, losing sales and money. And that make perfect business sense even in a general sense, because creating artificial scarcity is more important than having more people owning your console and buying your games. People will desire the console and will buy it (the product is not attractive enough by its own merit, bc reasons...), rasing the sales, but they are also delivering few units... Did you mind exploded yet?"

What makes it a tablet though? It has nothing that I think of when it comes to tablets. No browser, no e-mail, no youtube, it isn't a music player.

it has touch screen.

So DS, 3DS and Vita

So does the 3ds, and the vita.  Do you consider those tablets as well? I'm curious because I've never heard them referred to as tablets. While they did way, way more than the switch does.

Switch is called a tablet by some people, because it looks similar to a tablet when the Joy-Cons are detached.

Just the looks though. In functionality, it couldn't be further apart from them.

The Switch IS doing great because it's a handheld. It's also doing great because it's a home console. It's doing great because it's both a handheld and a home console, something which quite a lot of gamers have wanted for a very, very long time. It's not exactly rocket science. Versatility sells, plain and simple. This is why smartphones took over the market from flip phones. If your device can do a lot of things acceptably well, it's going to go over better than a device that can do a smaller number of those things slightly better.
