You say I should have a guilty conscience because there's an ounce of seriousness. What seriousness makes you think I should feel guilty?

I said you have a guilty conscience, not that you should have one. This post showed that you know that something isn't quite right:

On a related note and not directed at you alone, the situation that led to the creation of this thread can be explained by providing another example, but one that turns the tables.

"PS2 sold because it was a DVD player."

The above statement reduces the PS2 to a single aspect of its capabilities which in turn downplays the rest of them. Logically, it's a statement that is not said by PS fans; additionally, PS fans have an issue with this statement, not only because of the statement itself, but also because of who is saying it. This is some food for thought and should help to get a better understanding.

As a direct response to something you said, the above statement's impact and meaning changes by the mere addition of the word 'also' in the appropriate spot.

Except I would argue that PS2 did gain a lot of traction thanks to it being a DVD player, and PS3 had a similar situation with Blu-ray.  Those weren't the most important aspects of the consoles, but they were big ones. Attributing part of the success of a console to it's more niche offerings isn't admission that it can't stand on its own, or saying it's bad. It's just stating facts. In this specific case, it's been pointed out over and over that it's ability to also be a handheld have it a signing edge in a country where handhelds dominate the highly public-transit-dominated lifestyles.

And that's not me having a guilty conscience, that was me cutting away an entire post about how getting upset over this phrasing is  like the stupid regressive bullshit of getting upset over pronouns. It didn't mesh the way I wanted to, and it was making my post remarkably political when I didn't want to start a political debate. So I cut it down to just the basics: if it was worded a different way, no one would have been triggered.

That's disappointing.

I know, right? God forbid someone has a different opinion from you.

The handheld feature is a big selling point for me. I actually don't use it outside of the home too much, but games look beautiful on the handheld screen and sometimes I love just picking it up and playing it without having to go to an assigned location heh

It's actually coming very much in handy right now as I'm playing Mario + Rabbids in my hands as I watch college football on the television.

I think it would indeed be unfair or inaccurate to say that the Switch is only selling because it's a handheld and that it's the handheld crowd who's buying it. Really, with the games and price point I'm fairly confident that, outside of Japan, the majority of people who are buying it are console gamers more so than handheld.

Still, one shouldn't underplay the importance of it not being tied to one TV. This is the smallest hardware gap we've ever had between a portable system and current gen consoles, and it really does feel like you're getting the console experience in a handheld. Even better, when played in handheld mode it tends to look far better as a result of the small-but-clear screen, to the point that the visual sacrifices are far less noticeable.

It's definitely the feature that made it my favorite console, as while I do like to dock it to the TV for some games (such as BotW), I more often than not just reach for it and play it in my lap. For the record, I've always been a console gamer and am a PC enthusiast while only playing handhelds occasionally, so if the Switch can have this effect on me I think it probably has many others of similar background feeling that way as well.

I don't think we can say it is or is isn't with the current market.

We have to see if Nintendo launches a sucessor to the 3DS aswell or if they will stick to the switch only.

At that point we have to compare the market of 3DS+Wii U as the target market of the Switch and see if there was an increase or decrease in market size for Nintendo products.
Otherwise the Switch is to only be compared to the Wii U and would be a sucess compared to it.

So, neither you not people who say that can be sure of what they are saying. There simply isn't enough info atm and the many millions the console has sold so far are still the early adopters. We will have to see how this develops.
