They only said that because they wanted to "Dreamcast" the Xbox 360. Launching in that period would have been impossible anyway, they never intended on doing it.
The 05 demos, they were obviously CG. The final kits were not even near completion at that time. It was impossible for any developer to make demos on that level using what they had. Eventually it turned out everything was overpromised, which helped the Xbox 360 and the Wii tremendously.
Sony was quite stupid.
I just noticed that byline says the article is written by Geoff Keighley. Ahh the good ol' days. It's funny how MS and Sony are both literally quoted as wanting to kill each other at some point, and people wonder why crossplay isn't happening any time soon. It's interesting how gung ho Ballmer was on the 360, after the massive misfire the first one was financially. With the OG Xbox, they were personally taking a huge wash to put a PIII machine in console form in people's homes, and got burned for it. They were willing to spend whatever it took to have a foothold in the market, profits be damned.
Their entrance in the console space did move things for the better in some aspects. Consoles have PC architecture to their design approach and they're all the greater for it now. It's funny how Dreamcasted is now a verb in this industry. Shows how much fallout there was from Sega leaving the console space. That was the moment shit got real in console wars.

Bernie Stolar, a former Sony executive, remembers Kutaragi asking him as early as 1994 where he thought the nascent PlayStation console's main competition would come from. Nintendo, Stolar guessed. Maybe Intel. Kutaragi looked him squarely in the eyes. "No, Bernie, you are wrong," he said. "It is Microsoft. And I will kill them."
Hahaha. Sorry Ken, MS isn't dying anytime soon and Nintendo is on a path to killing Playstation.

You think Nintendo is killing Playstation? Interesting! Why?

No he wishes that, since I am sure you have read some of Pyro's comments. Although I do predict that Playstation will change drastically as a platform. But apparently the Switch is killing the PS4 which is literally doing better than ever.
Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I remember searching for Brawl info while listening to the PS3 song. Oh boy..

On a path to, yes. PS4 will be fine but the future isn't as bright for Sony as it once was.
Playstation no longer has a new media format to sell, Nintendo has already kicked them out half the market, 4K won't have the same impact HD did, VR's a relative flop, game streaming will be DOA, Smart devices and Switch (once it gets a few apps) are better non-gaming entertainment devices than PS4 and PS5 (probably).
Sony will have their first party exclusives and they'll continue to share the AAA multiplats but there's more chance the next breakout hit IPs will come from Nintendo increasing their output and smaller 3rd party titles where graphics aren't as important. Portability will make the Switch versions the best ones to own as well as getting portable-AA versions (ala PSP) of any big AAA games worth owning.
Nintendo will continue to collect 3rd parties throughout the gen setting them up nicely for the next jump in power while PS5 has to worry about matching XBX's 12 Teraflops, giving people a reason to upgrade their PS4 and hoping everyone doesn't choose portability over 4K.

Wow. Nintendo is apparently collecting 3rd parties like trophies. XBX has doubled its power (with a hidden GPU ?). Sony must be doomed.
Thanks for the laugh.
