Forums - Nintendo - EA on why FIFA 18 isn’t using Frostbite on Switch, will be better than last-gen version

...they do remember that Frostbite was a PS360 engine first, right? Also, hilarious they argue didn't want to have a cut down version but then excluded the story mode from the Switch version. Grade A logic on display here.

This is Frostbite 3 not 1 or 2.  That said I agree. The new Tomb Raider games is running on Xbox 360. With some work they can get about anything to run on whatever.

Multiple Frostbite 3 games came to PS360.  Battlefield 4, Battlefield Hardline, Need for Speed Rivals, Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare, Dragon Age Inquisition.  And Battlefield 4 started out on PS360.  So no, Frostbite 3 does not require PS4/Xbone specs to simply work.

It's a really good port too, I played through Rise of the Tomb Raider on 360 last month and it looks and runs fine despite being squeezed onto hardware far weaker than it was designed for.

They gained 720p/60fps in portable mode and 1080p/60fps in docked mode, something like that couldn't be achieved with Frostbite 3 engine on Switch.

Yes, but technically it doesn't improve anything. Frostbite and Switch obviously just don't work well together. So using a custom engine achieves the exact same result as if Frostbite could be scaled down better.

Having the version run at an acceptable framerate is not an achievement, it's the absolute minimum requirement but they're talking as if it's somehow super special when it is not. It has the exact same features now as the PS4 version.

Are we actually celebrating EA that they decided against releasing a broken game? Something is seriously wrong with your game when "being better than last gen console versions" is supposed to be the biggest selling point.

Everything we know and saw about this game points that is good port and and they put effort in this, regardless fact that it's not Frostbite game, and that's exactly what some people are celebrating here. And biggest selling point is full handheld mode of game and EA is pushing that fact very hard.

Afaik, they put a lot of effort for this game, of course by EA standars. Hopefully it pays off.

Did those games run at 60fps and at least 720p?

(not a rhetorical question, I really don't know.)

Garden Warfare was 720p/30fps, the rest were all sub-HD.

My guess is that the Switch version is actually running on FB3, but an adapted version of an old build and they decided they didn't want to associate it with the current version.

Yeah if I had to bet, I'd say that's the most likely option. I doubt they'd go to the trouble of making a whole new engine from the ground up just for one version of the game, especially a version where sales performance is uncertain.

I don't think so ...

Before FIFA transitioned to Frostbite 3 they were using the Ignite engine for the current gen consoles and the Impact engine for last gen consoles ... (FIFA didn't start using Frostbite 3 until FIFA 17, well after Frostbite 3 likely removed support of last gen consoles.)

I imagine the Switch is using the Ignite engine, the previous engine for current gen consoles ...

If they didn't put it on Switch then you guys would complain. They put it on Switch and you guys complain. Companies aren't purposely trying to lose money. The Switch audience isn't a target audience anyways. It'd be dumb to put maixum effort and resources into something where you won't get your return. They'll put a half decent port and like Street Fighter Switch owners will still buy it lol. Of course PlayStation is their main focus. That's where these companies are making the most money. No one buys a Switch to play third party games

Except, third party games on the Switch have done relatively well so far, and don't give me that bull "there's nothing to plays" there's well over a hundred titles. The Wii U didn't have many third party games, but even with a bigger install base (right now) the Switch' third party games are doing pretty good.

What are these Switch third party games that are doing well lol?

Much as I like my Switch, saying it'll run games better than hardware that came out over a decade ago isn't saying much for the system.
