Forums - General Discussion - My dog killed a neighbors cat! Not sure what to do

I think a few don't realize that if a dog kills a cat or an other small dog, it's very capable and not completely unlikely of killing a toddler or hell any child up to 6 years or so. After all they aren't hunting for food but for fun.
I don't think anyone wants to be that guy that says "he wouldn't harm anyone (except cats)" only to find out their dog killed a baby.

That cats might kill other people's rabbits or birds is completely irrelevant as they don't kill humans.

Not to mention that cats, killing mice and rats, save a lot more birds and baby animals than the ones, mostly adult, as slower animals aren't interesting preys for cats, they kill. When my family kept rabbits we had to quickly repair any hole in their cages, otherwise rats and mice killed baby rabbits eating their paws, and all the frantic jumping around of mother rabbits, their sole defence, as apparently they don't realise they could use their sharp teeth, that could disturb a cat and make it go away, didn't impress rats at all.

"Personally, I don't really think a dog killing a cat is worth putting the dog down. Or course I'm being bias. I know my dog doesn't like cats and this is why we don't have one in the house. It would be different if the dog attacked another dog or person. He would be put down immediately."

Gosh, if someone told me this after my cat had been killed by a dog I would have punched them. What a shitty and hypocritial thing to say.

As for the OP, I would try to come up with an agreement with the neighbor, but be sensible and don't say bullshit like the above.

Reading some of the comments makes me realize how many pussies there are in this community. You guys need to pull your heads out of your assses. I'm pro nature and don't like seeing things die but you have to realize animals kill other animals. It's the circle of life. I'm actually embarrassed to even be a part of this community.  I might as well just quit because I shouldn't waste my time interacting with fools.  Good luck with your utopian society.

A other said depends n law and legislation.

Some countries (or states i guess) may have a dangerous dog bread register, If your dog is on it and they kill something then they could be out of luck.

As a cat person (I have two) I would be really distraught if a dog killed one of my cats and I would certainly be furious with its owner. But since I love animals in general I wouln't want the dog to be put down as long as the owner really takes responability and the necessary steps to make sure it does not happen again, like put a muzzle on the dog when he's outside, go to a dog behaviourist to train it not to attack other animals, etc. On the other hand if it was a human who'd kill my cat, I would claw their eyes out, and beat the ever-living shit out of them before running them over with my car for good measure.

OP-Tell the owner that you understand what's happened must be catastrophic for them and ask them to paws and reflect before taking drastic action.

Because if we go for the "could be" then all humans should be killed because any human can kill another depending on the situation.

Improper analogy, and a bad example.
The proper analogy would be "then all humans who have murdered a cat should be killed because any human can kill another depending on the situation."
Now while people wouldn't demand that the human should be killed, they would not trust them near their children, and may be taken in for a psychiatric evaluation, and possibly locked up in a psych ward.

Why it's a bad example is because humans and animals are very different. We can communicarte in very specific ways through our language. Humans living in society are taught that killing other humans or pets is wrong, and why it is wrong. Generally speaking, when you pass another human on the street, you can be fairly certain that they are aware of these things. They are also aware of what they potentially stand to lose if they take another life and get caught. You cannot have the same guarantees for animals.

This pet owner was given a chance to be responsible for their pet and they failed, resulting in the death of another pet.
The cirtcumstances can't continue as they currently stand. That would be my opinion as this person's neighbour. Either convince the neighbours that it won't happen again by increasing security measures, or give the dog to someone else, where it either can't hurt others, or is more properly isolated from running off.

Yes. People are sensitive and inteligent, but curiosly have more leniency towards their crimes. Isn't it strange?

Sure there must be consequences for the owner. It can be money reparation, that he install a better system on his yard to prevent reoccurence, or that the dog is moved to a different location.

And if your cat ate a bird the owner of the bird could kill your cat?

Try to talk to the owner. He will be upset by the death of his cat, but maybe he will understand that you will also be equally upset if your dog dies.

If your dog killed my cat, I'd want it put down. However, I know I wouldn't be able to do that, as it wouldn't solve anything. Pets are like part of your family as you can see.

Best thing you can do is be honest, talk to the owner and hope for the best.

Theres nothing to do. Your dog did what dogs are meant to do and one less cat in the world makes everything better for everyone.

Kudos to you and your awesome doggo.

You're as sick as your favourite dirty leg-fucking animal. Remember: Cat owners have higher IQ than dog owners. Dogs are for simple minded plebs.
