I love this paragraph from the MTV news posting

Microsoft's controller isn't just a response to "Wii Sports"; it's slightly more ambitious. "They want the usual assortment of 'Halo'/ 'Gears'/ 'Forza'/ whatever, just in waggle form," our source told us. Such idea-generation has not gone smoothly. "The whole thing is a colossal clusterf---," the source said. "[Microsoft] marketing just want it so they can match the Wii point for point. The biggest parts of their marketing materials outline how easy it would be for third parties to port their Wii games to the 360."

As for court challenge -- I they steal the concept, that's fine. But if they steal the technology, they are toast.

Funny that at the same time high-end firmware makers don't want to touch the Wii, the console manufacturers are trying to copy it. Sounds like disruption at work.

It doesn't matter whether a late-comer peripheral like this would be universally successful. I would buy it, and I think it would be worth it.

My thoughts too, for I bought a JagCD brand new back in the day!

The biggest thing for me about the X-mote is that it signals the 360 is getting a strong new push, assuming it's real.

Microsoft would completely kill their brand name if this hoax were true.

If they want to do this, they need to start on their new console with these kinds of controls built in. Change the marketing strategy and try to expand their consumer base instead of changing the XBox 360's userbase.

They would also have to convince developers to make their games support the new controller. Not just input support (move up to jump) but to completely alter their games to support the new userbase.

All of this assumes the controller is real, which it isn't.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

I don't know a single person that has bought an X360 solely for Live Arcade games, and I don't see anyone buying a X360 for a half-assed Wiimote ripoff.

If Microsoft wants to incorporate motion controls into X360 games, fine by me. I just wish they'd actually put some effort into it instead of doing the same stupid mistake that most Wii 3rd party developers are doing/have done. If this thing ever materializes, that is.

Adding motion controls doesn't make the 360 "downmarket". I think this is a clear example for taking an analogy where it doesn't fit.

Agreed. This isn't about Microsoft trying to attract "lower tier" customers. This is about them integrating a new and improved feature into their product. Nintendo's success in the mainstream market has to do with more than just their controllers. It has to do with their brand image, the kinds of games they make, and the kinds of games they attract from third parties. If Microsoft slaps a remote on their system, they're not suddenly going to be flooded with mountains of waggle shovelware, because the audience they've built isn't going to want those games. What they're going to do is add support for the remote into the kinds of games already on the platform, and I think that can only be an improvement.

It's more like this. Honda and BMW both make cars, but Honda makes them for a much different consumer group. One day, Honda invents a new feature for their cars -- say, cruise control (I have no idea who actually invented it). The middle class customers they deal with love it, and their sales boost. But that doesn't mean cruise control is a downmarket feature. When BMW steals it, they're not reducing their brand. All they're doing is improving their product with a new and better feature. Rich people appreciate cruise control just as much as poor people!

Wow, everyone copies Nintendo.

no....... I believe microsoft and sony still have some form of quality control..

RROD and PS2 laser problems are the first two things that come to mind.

Edit:  I saw this coming a long time ago.  This isn't ment to compete with the Wiimote, it is ment to give developers a chance to get use to developing for a motion sensing device on a Microsoft system, and to allow Microsoft to work out any hardware bugs before a more improved version gets released as the main controller with their next system.

E3 2008 announcement LEAKED!

Nintendo & Sony supporter:

 Consoles: Wii & PS3.

M$ is a copycat.
Zune= iPod
Vista= OSX (BTW Vista sucks, read some reviews)
Now this, when has Microsoft actually made something that was there original idea ?
If they do this it will flop, like the zune and vista.

Consoles LTD, end 2009, end 2010 - prediction

Wii -  68 million, 90 million - Wii HD in late 2011 - $249

360 - 38 million, 47 million - 720 in late 2010 - $299

PS3 - 31 million, 43 million - slim PS3 in mid 2009 - $299

I can see this happening. however, I would think it unwise on MS's part. For one just because they have this controller doesn't mean 3rd parties who are building Wii-specific games will port it to the 360 to use it. After all how much of an attach rate will this peripheral actually get? 10% max, maybe. I have always maintained that pretty soon Wii will be getting king's share of game development and that any multiplatform games would be Wii designed and then ported to ps360. What MS is betting on is when this happens, it will only be Wii/360 since PS3 doesn't have a comparable controller. (which also shows they think I'm right, leo-j)

Basically this is Malstrom's ideas coming to fruitrition.

MS and Sony have realized they are losing/lost the lower tiers in video games. Sony doesn't care and will move upstream, just like they did with their electronics when China/Korea pummeled their products. MS on the other hand will try to fight it out with Nintendo. However, MS isn't realizing that the fight is already over and to push this out with all the marketing and a few craptacular games will just increase their losses.
