That's true to some extent. To rank up with randoms you have to basically be skill wise several ranks above your current one or you will be stuck in MMR hell. This only gets better once you reach D2. So if someone says that he's skillwise Platinum 3 but is stuck in Platinum 1 that could easily be true. To rank up, all your team mates need to be a higher skill level than what they currently are ranked and in solo queues that is always a coin toss.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
