Forums - Gaming - Prediction: Sony will have a portable that will play PS4/5 games

A super-portable 8 core X86 chip? Nobody is developing this - ARM is the architecture for low cost phone/tablets.

A portable that plays PS5 games anytime soon that's affordable seems unlikely. And digital only? Sounds terrible.

Not possible with current hardware. Look at the GPD Win, this is the maximum that mobile x86 hardware can currently achieve. Even mobile phones are faster. X86 architecture is insufficient for mobile use. Maybe in 5 years or so.

Sometime in the 2020s, Sony will release a handheld/tablet that will play their console games, possibly digital only. Sony could in essence make the PS5 a platform of products. We have a Pro for the high end line, but the low end/portability can be considered as well. Scaling will be the name of the game. Unlike the (current) Switch, not tied to 1 hardware.

The portable will render the games at 4x lower resolution as the PS5, there could be a system to dial back settings, use compressed, lower quality assets to leave enough overhead for the same visual fidelity, essentially you're getting the same experience. In fact I think Sony engineers biggest priority right now is figuring out scaling and making it a system wide feature, not only to low end but also to Pro lines down the line, to not have the hassle of individual patches anymoe. (I also do not expect native 4K to be standard on PS5, is too costly compared to checkerboarding.) Since you're not getting the full blown game as the PS5, file sizes should also be kept in check.

Just like Nintendo, they will not have to split their resources anymoe, all devices will play the same games. Sony isn't gonna leave the portable market. This will be the evolution of Vita and remote play.

1-Cok guzel , but Sony dont have Pokemon ? So this its a failed move from Sony??

2-In next-gen Microsoft will beat Sony

3-Most of Sony product its beaten from Samsumg

4-2020 Samsung will launch the Console

Only way that's even possible if if they just dow what Vita did. Remote play. Atm the most powerful mobile chipset is from Nvidia and it's pascal and it's nowhere near PS4 levels. Volta isn't out yet and not ready for a portable system..not for a while and it will only come close to matching PS4 quality. So yeah sorry not happening.

The main problem is that ps4 runs x86 or x64... and that just doesn't work on mobile.
Ninty got the drop by making a completely new system that has new OS from scratch and new hardware while ditching backwards compatability.

Why should be the GPD Win the maximum that mobile x86 hardware can currently achieve?

Its X7 Z8700 is 2.5 years old. Some other Intel-SoCs since then with a TDP of 5 Watt are a lot faster:

And in a few months AMD will release Ryzen Mobile:

I really hope so.
With detachable controllers, please. I can't go back after switch.

I would like that too, but the KEY in here is that 1 version of the game NEEDS works through all the gama of PS5 devices, so that with 1 Buy you get all the versions of the game; PS5GO - PS5 - PS5PRO.

All the downscaling/upscaling need to be handled by the hardware, because if not devs will get greedy and charge $40 for the portable version.   If that happens the portable device will die.

Still need an 8-core for hardware compatibility with the PS4 - it might even have to be Jaguar (microarchitecture) for full compatabilty.
