If you're talking specifically about your Breath of the Wild experience, yeah, the control scheme is very confusing in that game.

But in general, controllers have the right amount of buttons that are placed strategically so it becomes intuitive to use them.

Best way to get the better cognitive response from a gamer is to not modify standard set-up control schemes. For example, the jump button in BotW is now X instead of the standard A used in Mario games, which makes it a hella difficult to relearn. Same goes for the dash button B which was accomplished by pressing Y before. That's probably why you're having a hard time figuring that out.

I think you are right, when I was playing the game I kept thinking "I'm sure this was different before. Why isn't it more similar to mario?" Why can't there be a standard for games that everyone follows? Why is the lowest face button the "go back" button on Nintendo consoles but the "activate" button on the 360 controller. It makes going from PC to Switch very confusing.

More buttons is better, I have a Xbox Elite controller on my pc its fantastic!
The more complicated the better!

Its all about getting used to it.

I had been a very very passionate gamer back in SNES/N64 days, but since then i keep playing less and less.
Nowadays I can not handle too complex controls anymore. I have no problem at all with a pc keyboard, even not to go for strange shortcuts. But something like move + click left stick (for crouch or so) + pressing L1/L2 (for drawing weapon) + using right stick for viewing + using a face button or R1/R2 or whatever additional buttons for some action is simply too much for me.
Moreover the front shoulder button (L/R on e.g. WiiU Pro-Controller, Switch-Pro-Controller and WiiU-Gamepad) are just a pain for me. I can barely reach them while having the controller in a comfortable position. And having fingers on both of them really as a default position is even worse, then my hands feel like 2 minutes until pain.
So i had voted for [x]They are too complicated

That's another thing! The whole clicking the analogues for extra buttons, WTH! I keep accidently crouching, paticularly when I try to run from those stone laser shooting creatures.

Someone that uses a keyboard and mouse. No i think controllers are a good balance between being complicated and simple.

It can't be that complicated if a 7 year old can figure it out. "Casuals" simply don't want to learn go through a process of "learning a game".

Young people learn faster than adults, and are generally better at learning new things.

My only issue with the control scheme on botw is that I accidently press the right stick where link goes into crouching. That also happens while holding a shield and move backwards. He will ignore the shield holding and crouch...... and here comes the Lynel swinging his swords towards me. BAM.

Yes, they are. For most people.

I´ve met many people that are interested in console gaming, but don´t play due to the controllers. They are not patient enough to learn to use 06+ different buttons for any given game.

Of course, for long-time gamers like us, that doesn´t seem an issue because we are already used to modern controllers. But many people still struggle with them and I have the feeling that  this is something that seems to prevent console gaming to be bigger.

We need 6 face buttons, and all triggers to be analog.
Oh and another set of triggers on top, or below the current set would do nicely.

Wait, who the fuck is still making non-analog triggers?

...

Oh.
