I was talking about dvds upscaled through my Sylvania  BD player - sure, with Blu-Ray I can see the pores on an actors face, but for the majority of movies out there upscaled dvds and 5.1 surround is good enough for me. VHS to dvd was a huge improvement in every way - dvd to Blu-Ray isn't that big of an upgrade for someone who isn't a technophile - which the majority of consumers aren't. Don't get me wrong - I love my BD player for movies like Planet Earth, Avatar, TDK, Transformers, Battlestar Galactica series,  etc. But for movies  like Crazy Heart, The Lovely Bones, Lost series, etc. that aren't full of eye candy I'll get on dvd because its usually cheaper and I can watch them on my laptop, kids can watch in the suv, and I can loan to friends. VHS needed to be replaced - dvd is still good enough for the majority of consumers.

Not only is DVD good enough for the majority of consumers but a significant number of people would rather download lower-res XviD files than even buy or rent the stuff on DVD. Blu-Ray has to compete with not only DVD but also digital distribution. Blu-Ray has already surpassed failed experiments like Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio but just like digital distribution of audio hurt Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio adoption, I think digital distribution of video is hurting Blu-Ray adoption. Just not to the same extent because the quality jump from DVD to Blu-Ray is much more noticeable than CD to Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio. It also doesn`t help that you can download videos in HD (whether through legal or illicit channels). They`re just not the same quality as Blu-Ray obviously since they are more compressed.

DD isnt hurting Blu-ray much at all,  it still comes down to price. Blu-ray sold more in the first two months this year than DD did all of last year.

I own over 70 blu-ray movies and I haven't purchased a DVD since PS3 launched.

I remember once DVD came out I refused to watch VHS ever again. The difference was mind blowing. And ever since early 2008 with everything being released on blu-ray I reached the point where I refuse to watch a DVD ever again at home. The difference is so great between the two when you sit as close to an HDTV as I do (about 8-12 feet). DVD looks extremely soft and blurry by comparison.

I suppose if you sit 25-30 feet away it would be a bit harder to see the sharpness difference depending on how good your eyes are. But the huge improvement in colors with the increased bit-rate that blu-ray allows are another dead give away that I'm watching a blu-ray.

Well over 200 by now

200, nice. That's about how many DVDs I have collecting dust. I buy a lot less now than I used to because of that and my online rental subscription. I went crazy buying a lot of blu-rays with all of the good deals in the beginning of the format war, but now I only buy what I consider to be the must have new movies and re-purchases. Every other blu-ray I rent with blockbuster online.

As far as DD goes I can't get into digital distribution of movies because they lack the 5.1 surround sound tracks.  I wonder how long it will take DD to surpass physical media in sales, if ever. I'm all for convenience, but I do prefer having a collection to hold rather than a collection of movies on a hard drive and especially if I have to wait 6-8 hours for them to download.

If streaming quality was as good as blu-ray with 5.1 surround sound and half the price I would probably convert. I think thats what it would take for me to drop physical media. Same goes for games. At least half price if I can't resell them.

Do you buy your Blu-rays from Amazon?   The deals on there are incredible,  I rarely if ever buy Blu-rays at regular stores anymore,  amazon always have them beat price wise.

As for DD,  I dont see it making a big dent anytime soon,  for rental yeah the streaming is a great idea, but not for owning them.  With music it was a different story,  there was a convienence to having you music that portable.  But there isnt for movies.   And its current marketshare is tiny.   Blu-rays first 2 months this year outsold DD for the enitre year last year,  and Blu-rays growth was at a pace of 3 times greater than that of DD.

Cool. I didn't realize DD is such a small market still.

And yes I buy all of my blu-rays from Amazon. I took advantage of a lot of the Amazon buy 1 get 1 blu-ray deals early on.

And I buy all of my videogames from Amazon too. Getting all those game gift cards and essentially paying $40 is amazing for new releases. I wish I could buy everything from Amazon! lol.
