Yeah not looking good for Blu Ray at the mo.

People need to remember that it couldnt have launched at a worse time. A worldwide recession that is expected to have repercusions for another 2 years at least is pretty bad luck.

But the numbers dont lie, the year appears to have been one of wasted chances.

I think the industry is going to have to play dirty and start delaying release of DVD's and dumbing down content in order to establish Blu Ray as a premium product.

Getting costs down wouldnt be a bad idea DVD's in the UK average 7 GBP, Blu Ray's average 20 GBP. People notice that kind of a difference.

Oh and while Im at, How about some adverts for Blu Ray in the UK. Most people dont even know what it is !

I think Blu-Ray releases really need to come down in price. Everyone I know, even with HDTVs, still buys more DVDs than Blu-Rays. Seeing as Blu-Rays are still so expensive, I haven't bought a film in a while (I'm not going to buy DVD just to repurchase when Blu-Ray comes down in price).

Best buy just in their weekly ad had a few Blu-rays for $17,  a few were only a couple weeks old.  Also  most new releases are only about $22 at Best Buy,   Which is what DVD new releases used to beabout 3 years ago.   So they are cheap.

Blu-Rays are still pretty damn expensive here (Ireland). I know those graphs are for the US, but I doubt the scenario in terms of marketshare could be that much different here. Last time I was in HMV (which is the closest place to me with a large selection), they will still €30 or so, easily €10-20 more expensive that DVDs. Most new release DVDs seem to come out for €15.99-€19.99, but there are some cheaper ones and they drop in price much quicker.

Wow, those prices are ridiculous,  I can see why people would be holding out over there

That's not to say we don't get deals from time to time. For Xmas 2008, I got The Dark Knight/Batman Begins Blu-Ray pack for €17.99 I think. But, if Blu-Rays are only selling when there is a deal, they'll never get the marketshare needed to replace DVD. BluRay needs to be competitive day in, day out, which it isn't here.

Well they had to do it for DVD to VHS which was a MUCH bigger difference so yeah.  It was always going to take some dirty pool.

91:9 ?

I haven't looked at this thread for a while now. I can't believe the DVD is still THE format of choice by a lot of customers. It still smashes the BluRay.

When do you guys think we will see a 50/50 situation?

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Even if we didn't have the recession it wouldn't of been 50/50 yet.

I will give you an example of why Blu-ray is not taking off and why it won't.

I was in HMV the other day looking to buy some new films. I was with my gf. I bought lots of cheap dvds for £3 each. She picked up District 9 on Blu-Ray and looked at it. She said "i want to see this". I said i had it was a good film etc.. She then pondered about wether to buy it or not because it was £16.99. She then saw across the room the Dvd version of the film for £4.99. She went and bought that version without even thinking about it.

The lesson is most people could not give a monkies about quality they care about the price. For her it was an instinct decision to get the cheaper one and save 60%.
People will not jump to a new format while it cost in some instances 300% more then the older one. They just don't care about the quality difference.

Until you see Blu-Rays and dvd's at the same price it won't catch on.
