Yep, exactly that. I experienced similar disappointment and thoughts. I doubt we're alone. Personally I'd even include Mario Kart in that list, but that's probably an unpopular opinion, and I admit there was a different family-situation surrounding Mario Kart 64, which gives me a bias towards the 64 game.

GCN had much more worth while third party support than N64 though (Symphonia, RE4, Baten Kaitos, Timesplitters, REmake, RE0 etc...) and the are superior additions in other games like Paper Mario:TTYD, Animal Crossing, Melee, F-Zero, Metroid Prime etc... as well as additions like Pikmin

Imo if you look at both N64 and GCN overall the latter was better the former just has the luxury of having a ground breaking position which helps elevate its status.

Its not a luxury when you revolutionise 3D gaming and basically start the formula for multiplayer shooters and create what is still regarded as the mecca of video games in OoT.

  • Mario 64 > Sunshine
  • You had peak Rare vs a shadow of itself on the GC
  • In general platformers on the N64 were incredible for its time
  • GoldenEye!!
  • OoT + Majora > WW for most (Though I think the latter but I can understand)
  • Pokemon Snap is still a gem, and no one can argue it wasn't
I'll give the GC Smash (though N64 started it) and Metroid but N64 was much more influential on gaming (in some ways more than the PS1) and the fact that its games are still played today is a testament to Nintendo. GC had a nice library but was at the time the worst console Nintendo ever released, even though it's appreciated for many things such as its wonderful controller, but it was the console that put Nintendo into a shell of its former self.

I still love you, Dreamcast. Even if no one else does.

Xbox because it was mine, I also had a Gamecube but it was shared with my brothers.

Proud to be a Californian.

It is a luxury when doing comparisons because nostalgia impacts how it is looked back on heavily, GC flat out has a better library than N64 overall, it just has more to offer in it but because the N64 had games that were influential that itself can inflate people's views of it, the droughts with the N64 were even worse than GCN as praised as the N64's impact is to gaming it's the platform were Nintendo lost market leadership following the force that was the SNES.

Want an example name an equivalent N64 has to games like Tales of Symphonia, Twin Snakes, Baten Kaitos, PSO, Skies of Arcadia, Capcom vs SNK, Viewtiful Joe etc... You'll have a hard time just trying to come up with a JRPG for N64 because of all the Nintendo platforms it had the least amount of third party support until the Wii U, GCN can at least hold up a library that has answers to the library of the competition.

I owned all 3 systems and the Gamecube was the worst console ever made until the Wii-U arrived. The Gamecube had a horrible, unprecise gamepad and not a single game worth playing.

Not one single game? Even the Atari Jaguar had at least one good game!

Tempest 2000, Rayman and AvP, so yeah, at least 3.

Dreamcast. It was ahead of it's time way before we even knew the other 2 existed. I still have all of the 6th gen consoles by the way. ALL OF THEM!!!

Close call between the Cube and the Dreamcast...

But I'll go with the Dreamcast, because I was into arcade games quite a bit at the time, and the Dreamcast was truly a beast when it came to arcade ports. That, and Shenmue.

I’m gonna go with Xbox.

Halo 1 and 2 are classics, and it had plenty of other strong titles like Star Wars Battlefront, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Chronicles of Riddick, Timesplitters 2 and 3, Shenmue II, Burnout 1-3…

Excellent and underrated console.

Add Ninja Gaiden Black and Crimson Skies.

Edit: Almost forgot about Mechassault!

To be clear this is a difficult choice because I had all the consoles and I probably played on my Xbox the most, even more than the PS2. Other than the fact Sega died I would call that gen the greatest ever, which hurts because I was a Sega fan. This was also the last Gen I owned all the consoles.
