Yep, exactly that. I experienced similar disappointment and thoughts. I doubt we're alone. Personally I'd even include Mario Kart in that list, but that's probably an unpopular opinion, and I admit there was a different family-situation surrounding Mario Kart 64, which gives me a bias towards the 64 game.

GCN had much more worth while third party support than N64 though (Symphonia, RE4, Baten Kaitos, Timesplitters, REmake, RE0 etc...) and the are superior additions in other games like Paper Mario:TTYD, Animal Crossing, Melee, F-Zero, Metroid Prime etc... as well as additions like Pikmin

Imo if you look at both N64 and GCN overall the latter was better the former just has the luxury of having a ground breaking position which helps elevate its status.

Its not a luxury when you revolutionise 3D gaming and basically start the formula for multiplayer shooters and create what is still regarded as the mecca of video games in OoT.

  • Mario 64 > Sunshine
  • You had peak Rare vs a shadow of itself on the GC
  • In general platformers on the N64 were incredible for its time
  • GoldenEye!!
  • OoT + Majora > WW for most (Though I think the latter but I can understand)
  • Pokemon Snap is still a gem, and no one can argue it wasn't
I'll give the GC Smash (though N64 started it) and Metroid but N64 was much more influential on gaming (in some ways more than the PS1) and the fact that its games are still played today is a testament to Nintendo. GC had a nice library but was at the time the worst console Nintendo ever released, even though it's appreciated for many things such as its wonderful controller, but it was the console that put Nintendo into a shell of its former self.
