I did some Bestbuy.com searching for giggles. Only one I found that says 1080p but is not 1920 x 1080 is

It's resolution is actually 1920x1200, which is probably why it costs 33,000 dollars.

Doesn't prove Mike right, but I just thought I'd share what I found ^^;;

Heh, nice find. I suspect that they advertise that as 1080p just because it's a well-known marketing term and because technically, the television can do that resolution (and better).

edit: The reason for that resolution is that it is actually 16:10, the format used for computer monitors.

Most 720p (HD Ready) advertised TVs have a slightly higher native resolution. Content is being up- or downscaled by a scalar chip to the TV's native resolution, like 1366×768.

I was waiting for you to use this as reasoning for your argument.

Listen, downscaling is perfectly acceptable. Upscaling is not and does not change the fact that I am right about this. 1080p is 1920x1080. Anything higher than that number can be considered 1080p because it has the required pixels to be advertised as such, just as 720p is technically 1280x720 yet many 720p sets are 1366x720.

Wow those words would have had more punch to them if he had he not used the words "may have". But I guess this is coming from Sony's VP of marketing so it must be true.

We should believe their claims though because like their claim of not paying for exclusives, it has to be true. I mean doesn't it make sense to you that a FPS like Haze had it's PC and 360 versions cut late in development and the PS3 version kept? Especially at a time when the PS3 was getting hammered in sales by the 360? I mean if it was your money on the line and Sony wasn't paying for the exclusive in some way wouldn't you agree to such a decision?

I have to report late to the game but I just figured out what the each of Microsoft and Sony are doing.  I thought this gen of PS3 FPS was kind of getting heavy on the PS3 but I thought it was all the 3rd party developer doing it.  But as Legend pointed out, Sony has been going out of its way to put games like Haze, UT3, and Killzone on their console.  So much so, that they have neglected their RPG front, which Microsoft has been targeting in the last year or so.  Will I have have to pick up a X360 sooner than Christmas to get some decent RPGs and avoid all the bang bang shooters that I am really starting to dread.

And they are not paying for exclusives, they are simply helping them with marketing budget.  You know, the way Microsoft has been with other companies.  They all been doing it since Nintendo "got" the rights to Street Fighter II on its system and  Sega had to wait a year or two.  Business as usual.

I'm just saying...

From your Wikipedia article:

"1080p is the shorthand name for a category of display resolutions"

Note, how its states resolutions rather than resolution. Your own source, name me a few 1080p resolutions.

I can list you 100 TVs that are advertised as 1080p and have a 1920x1080 resolution.

Name me ONE that is advertised 1080p with a resolution other than that. Simple request if you're correct about this, right?

If rocketpig won't name a few, I will.

1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p30, 1080p50, 1080p60. They're in that same article.

Framerates or refresh rates do not change resolution. A printed photograph isn't of better or worse resolution than a movie in the same resolution, due to screen flickering at lower refresh rates the photograph may look better though.

Wow. Sony told me they will win and that the other guys are done. Guess I should buy some stock.

"We have good games coming some time in the next 18 months. All the other guys' good games are already available so you can play them now, perhaps at cheaper used prices or GOTY prices with added content. And they may be making more good games we don't now about yet. So we're better. Ha ha."

Yes. Sounds about right.

It's funny because that's how I thought of it while I was reading. Even funnier was when MikeB agreed whole-heartedly with him!

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

You asked for a clarification of:

"1080p is the shorthand name for a category of display resolutions."

from Wikipedia.

WoW gave you the answer. It's right there in the Wiki article. Are you seriously going to argue the "s" in "resolutions"? Is one letter in a Wiki article all you have to base the validity of your point on?

If that's the case, I choose "Q". It's much cooler than "S".

Well ms (and nintendo) still have plenty of big guns coming out so they may be down but their not out.

Other than mario kart wii, the wii has no big guns left, and the 360 only has gears of war, and ninja gaiden this year.

Also, I bet someone will respond with " NINTENDO WILL ANNOUNCE AMAZING NEW WII GAME". You forget, sony can announce something and show things that can steal the show like they did last year.

Rats, foiled again. Can't argue with that kind of logic.

On a 1366 x 768 HD Ready HDTV, 360/PS3 games rendered in 720p will be upscaled.

Considering you don't find upscaling acceptable at all, you must be very upset with Microsoft which released its flagship big budget exclusive rendering in only 640p. Microsoft owns the Halo franchise.
