Mario and Splatoon may be accessible to kids due to their lack of sex/violence/coarse language/etc, but they're just as accessible to adults. Nintendo knew when they made these games that a massive portion of their player base are the 30-somethings who grew up on the NES, SNES, and N64, so they're made with adults in mind as well as kids. Nintendo's games are designed to be enjoyable whether you're 9 or 39, and no more one than the other. |
Its possible that Mario remains an endearing gaming icon. It could be why he got a huge pop when he made a cameo in the closing ceremonies in the Olympics. Because in the end, it doesn't matter if the character(s) is considered cartoony or kiddy, if you enjoy it at whatever age, it shows how endearing the character is throughout the years. Even people of our age and older still have happy feelings when talking about Mario. Its like Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny.
