Forums - Gaming - Can we have Physical to Digital Next Generation?

So my solution for the next generation of consoles is that when a physical copy is bought you have the option after installing the game on the hard drive to run the game off of that hard drive and tie it to your account, but in order to do this the physical copy of the disk needs to be in the console and the console will make the disc unreadable to any other console but that unique console (for obvious reasons)

maybe it's because I've been up 24 hours now because of work, but this part doesn't really make sense to me. What's the point of digital if you have to have a disc in the drive to run it?

The first time you put the disc in you can do this, afterwards you no longer need the disc :)

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

So what you mean is why can't we buy digital keys in a reusable physical format that ties and unties to the account owner? Because that's not clarified at all in the OP d:

Assuming that's what you mean, it seems like an okay idea to me that I can't inherently find a flaw in at the moment. But again. 24 hours no sleep lol

And the disc is essentially useless as the console would have writen on the disc telling it that the licence is no longer tied to the disc but your console right?

As mentioned before, a writeable disc. So if you want to sell the game, you'd have to put the disc back in and essentially turn off the digital rights as the licence goes back on the disc?

Hmm, pie.

So in terms of games, you get a digital version of the game when you purchase a physical disc copy. Sell that game and the digital version won't go with the disc, it stays with you. If all things happen as they should, due to this, digital only games will go down in price as there isn't the idea you get both physical and digital copies.

I don't really see that working, if I want a game I can buy the game, then sell the game but keep the game?

No no I just mean why can't we buy a game and run it off the hard drive if we choose to, and this is a way of doing that, that protects retailers.

No you can't sell the disc after you've decided to do this. If you decide to buy a game digitally you can't trade it in and nor can you in this scenario.

Wouldn't need a write able disc. Disc would have DRM and a unique serial layer per each copy sold. When you insert a given disc, that serial is interpreted and linked to the account owner of the console it's in. That serial is no longer functional in any other console until it's been unlinked from the first account.

HOWEVER I did just find a flaw - this requires an always online connection to work.

edit - I guess that's not what the Op meant. I'm still confused then

The only way you can tie it to an account will be through DRM. It would require an always online connection.

There doesn't seem to be any 'untying' in his idea. The disc is tied to the console forever.

Then that completely defeats the purpose of physical. We just came full circle on microsofts thought process for the xb1 reveal. I'm not seeing the overwhelming benefit here over just going digital (except maybe for Uk users who have to pay higher for digital but that seems more like an exception)
