Forums - Nintendo - Metriod Prime 4 Reactions

It's less about seeing just a logo and more about the idea that Nintendo has actually listened to Metroid fans. Arlo did a fine video about it. I'm not really a Metroid Prime guy myself but I can see why they are so excited after seeing a 7 year absence from the series.

Have seen some reactions in regards to this announcement, and it annoys me as much as many Smash announcements.

I swear half the people have never played the series they are so hyped about. So many reactions of people that don't even start screaming until they see the actual words Metroid Prime 4. It was clear as day it was a Metroid game as soon as you could make out the space S. Then you had the Prime mucic cut in and at that point any fan should know which Metroid it would be. Then the 4 was like a beating a dead horse at that point as to it being prime 4. Yet many don't react until the words pop up.

Same as in smash. Many people freaked out with each new reveal, even many times admitting they never played said game, or constantly going along with their screams, "who is this"

I'm glad for those fans, but it kinda is bittersweet for Nintendo because as a whole, the franchise is really not that popular. It will sell maybe a million copies WW on Switch, but some C-tier Mario spin-off would likely do about the same or more. It would be great if the general game community were half as passionate about Metroid as these guys are.

Blegh, this point again. I think it will more them likely sell 2 mil at least, which isn't the greatest but depending on it's budget should be decent.

I think what a lot of people fail to see about Switch is that it having big franchises and those games being just as revolutionary is JUST as important. The highest selling Zelda and 3D Mario were both on the 64, and that's largely because of it's innovation. The Switch is really the 64 of this era, it has games that aren't just technically revolutionary for a handheld, but also games that are revolutionary in their series. The only reason people think BOTW can get to 10 mil in a series known for 4-7 mil is BECAUSE its innovation commands attention.

And thats what people forget, just as much as the franchises, the Switch relies on being revolutionary, both as a handheld and with its library.

My long winded point is - if Nintendo can make buzz around Prime 4, it will gain more fans. Im one of those people that only got into series like Fire Emblem or Zelda because of the buzz. Lets just hope for the best.

I also screamed. At work.

Agree with this.

I was one of the people who jumped on board with Fire Emblem at Awakening. It was a combination of getting familliar with the characters through Smash and a ton of positive reviews for Awakening.

I'm also this way for Metroid. I'd never really played a Metroid game until I played Super Metroid a few years ago. Samus Returns will be a day one purchase for me.

Sometimes, franchises bloom late.

Yeah I'm not really sure if Metroid is ever gonna be a big thing, there's late blooming and then there's blooming in your 60s/70s, Metroid is a very old franchise by now. It kinda is what it is, the truth is I think the type of gameplay it has (solitary, low action, exploration based) just doesn't really lend itself to a big audience.

Even the film franchise its inspired by (Alien) has always been a box office light weight compared to something like Star Wars, which is more of a crowd pleaser.

But that point is mute when A ) Alien is still one of the biggest franchises of all time(seriously..comparing Alien to Star Wars is kind of a fallacy) and B ) No one is saying Metroid will do Destiny numbers, but I honestly think 3.5-5 mil is very possible for a revolutionary Metroid.

Alien isn't as big as Star Wars because Alien is doing something completely different. The same is true with Metroid. The difference is that Alien made such a big mark in Sci Fi that even with its niche genre it became one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. I honestly think theres a way to bring niche genres into the mainstream. Metroid CAN be the Alien of video gaming, it just needs some actual trust from Nintendo.

Well the operative comparison was Metroid to Fire Emblem. Fire Emblem certainly isn't the Star Wars of the video game world.

Great buzz + great game basically doubled the Fire Emblem audience.

Great buzz + great game has Breath of the Wild gunning for the top spot in the Zelda franchise.

I could see something like this happening with Metroid. It'll never be Mario or Zelda, but it could outperform expectations.

Here's a game that cannot afford to disappoint, much like FFVIIR. People have been foaming at the mouth for these titles, I can't imagine how daunting these titles must be for the developers. I have to assume this is a loud minority cause with this kind of reaction, it seems there should be no reason for this game not to have been out by now.
