Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer - "Why do you care about 60fps?"

its not the end all to have 60fps. i suppose on certain titles it would be better but its all about the games and gameplay, id like for anyone to point out a game on my steam uplay or origin library that looks better than uncharted 4 on my ps4? nope didnt think so

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

You talk about framerate and then move over to how a game looks. Framerate makes a game play/feel better.

I'd be with Phil here if he didn't defend 4K in favour of 60 FPS. It's probably true that most people can't tell the what's causing the difference between 30 FPS games and 60 FPS games, but I bet a lot of them can feel the difference without identifying what's different. The same probably goes for 1080p vs. 4K, but I bet most people that can't really tell what exactly is different would still prefer better framerate over higher resolution. One looks slightly different, the other feels slightly different. Of course there's some genre-dependency here, but most shooters, for example, would definitely benefit more from framerate than resolution. We're simply at the point where increasing resolution offers very diminishing returns already, at least in a lot of typical cases (I know distance and screen size matter a lot).

This is saddening. I have to sit pretty close to my tv to see the difference between 4k and 1080p. I normally don't sit as close as is required. I notice the choppiness of 30fps no matter where in the room I am.

but you do have games that are 30fps that look and play better than games at 60fps. its all dependant on many things. I understand the argument that uncharted 4 would be better at 60fps but as right now it isnt and looks better than anything equivilant out there its literally stunning

IMO the obsession with 60 fps 1080p is just silly. People want ever increasing graphics, and no matter how good something already looks they will complain and ask for more. The second that consoles go to 60fps 1080p for all games, PC gamers will start saying that 120 fps 4k is the new standard, and that 60 fps 1080p looks ugly.

Racing games, shooters, and fighting games all benefit from high frame rates. But it isn't needed. Do I want it? Yes, especially for my fighting games. Is a game unplayable without it? Hell no!

Nah. Most of my life, including now, I haven't cared about frame rate a ton. I used to not even be able to tell the difference. Then again I don't care that much about graphics or resolution either. As long as it's fun to play.

The year is 2025...

"OMG this game looks so bad! It's only 240 fps, and 12k!"

The problem with Phil Spencer is that he shouldn't tell people a product is 4k, uncompromised when even the slightly educated people are listening. Its obvious that most people dont care, but when you say uncompromised this denotes the games run without any runtime bottleneck (in framerate). Granted, the scorpio is more powerful, he shoud be more honest. Even the more hardcore of gamers who play on PC and have invested in computers that cost above a grand and play in 4k, knew it was bull.

To tell someone they are breaking their argument because they are admitting a truth that console makers dont make consoles that look for a smooth framerate above high resolution is wrong as well. If you want 4k gaming uncompromised, you're going to have to wait even more years for the right parts to sell to people. Even then, games are going to be pushing the limit of console capability.
