Forums - Nintendo - The 3DS post-Switch is still kicking. Discuss.

Few titles can make me want a piece of hardware as much as a proper Metroid title. I'm not completely ready to jump in yet, but a few solid 9.2 reviews of Samus Returns could get me to finally join the 3DS family. I'm not much of a handheld gamer, but I did own a GBA-SP (nesversion) and a DS Lite. Unfortunately, outside of the Metroid titles and the Castevanias they didn't see much play.

Nintendo IS going to transition completely to the Switch; it's just going to happen over time. 3DS is 65+ million; it makes sense to keep supporting it for a while. But even now, they showed much more Switch stuff at E3 2017, and 3DS was secondary. So I don't think people need to worry that 3DS will be taking up too many resources from the Switch.

Personally, I think it's smart to gradually wean support of the 3DS over the next 1.5 years. By 2019, I imagine Switch should have a healthy install base, and the 3DS, at that point having had close to an 8 year lifespan, can be retired successfully.

The 3DS is cheap. Much cheaper than the Switch. It makes sense to keep it around for the low-price point that is attractive to parents buying a handheld for kids.

So on that front I fully expect it to do well going forwards.

theres no place or reason for 3DS exclusives at this point. Metroid 2 Remake, Superstar Saga, and even Sushi Strikers should be on Switch.

Muda Muda Muda Muda Muda Muda!!!!

I still dont have a Switch, I´m going to wait to see what happens next year. So I´m happy that they continue supporting the 3DS, I love the DS family <3

I´m extremely sure that Nintendo is planning a Switch Mini release exclusive portable as a suscesor for the 3DS sometime in early 2019. That´s when I will buy one :)

I intend to pick up Metroid Samus Returns, Radiant Historia, and SMT Strange Journey day one, and maybe FE Echoes when I see it for cheap, any other notables releases I'm missing? (idc for Ultra Sun/Moon)

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
