That's true...I might liken BK3 and LBP in their system selling potential, but I think that's because I'm a bit more pesimistic than you are on how BK3 will turn out. I think they both have a chance of greatness, but it's not definite at all.

What do you think of NG2's system selling abilities?

I think (assuming they are BOTH great games) BK3 has better system selling potential than LBP, simply because of it's franchise status.  It is often called the second best platformer ever (after mario).  If we said that franchise history didn't matter, the PS3 line-up would lose a lot of it's swagger.  Most of it's "advantage" over the 360's line-up is drawn from sequelitis, rather than a guarenteed superior quality of games.  LBP on the other hand, could go either way.  It might actually end up being the most hardcore-only title on the PS3 given it is based around building levels.  Regardless of it's sales (or even it's quality), I do respect Sony for trying to push the boundaries of gaming with this title.

But like you said, either or both games could flop.

As for NG2, it is also a potentially better system seller than a lot of other games on both platforms, due to it's (relative) popularity on the Xbox and the non-existence of any other game like it on next-gen platforms except NG Sigma (and if any PS3 owners loved that, they may consider a 360 purchase for NG2).  I also think it's one of the few titles that might sell well for MS in Japan, and boost hardware. Of course in Japan, the 360 selling 8,000 consoles in a week is considered a boost.

Well don't worry about the Japan numbers too much Starcraft....PS3 ain't doing great there lately either.

I think I would disagree on the hardcoreness of LBP, if they give it a very easy to use interface then it could be one of the most casual games on the PS3. You have to remember that making your own levels is one part of the game, but you can also spend your time playing through the single player they made with your friends or by yourself, and then play through all the levels other people have made. Of course I'm just interpreting it that way because I'm a Sony fan and want it to work out for the best ^^

Your right though, it all depends exactly how it goes.  I don't think it will be in the middle, it will either be a very bad or a very good system seller.

The problem is, they are all very hardcore things.  Building your own levels, downloading other peoples levels and distributing your own levels online.  If Sony finds a way to interest casuals in these things then those casuals (with money to burn) will jump on the PS3.  But it's like with the 360.  People that pay for live are hardcore, but of those that are "signed on" to live but don't pay, I think the "hardcore" rate is very different.

Then there are people that are hardcore gamers like me that hardly ever go online.  I've actually let my Gold membership expire, I haven't renewed it in a month or more.

So there are a whole lot of criteria LBP has to fill.  If it does this, I reckon it will shift more PS3's than MGS4 (which we KNOW is hardcore and like with Halo 3, many of the games fans will already own a PS3).  If it doesn't do this, then I think the game will fade into relative obscurity.

madskillz, I might be able to agree with you except for the fact that PS3 owners buy more games than 360 owners. You don't believe me? Lets look at America (because the 360 has always been the most popular there) for last week.
The Xbox 360 has 11,377,532 consoles sold in NA and the PS3 has 4,466,281. 11,377,532/4,466,281 = 2.54742861 times as many consoles.
The Xbox 360 sold 1,138,997 units of software last week and the PS3 sold 547,336. 1,138,997/547,336 = 2.080983162 times as many software units.
With 2.547 times as many consoles in NA, the 360 sold 2.081 times as many software units. Thus, PS3 owners buy more games than 360 owners, leading us to the logical conclusion that most PS3 owners use their console primarily as a gaming machine.

@ Retrasado

Thanks for being rational. However, I was talking about worldwide sales, based on the overall software sales according to this site's numbers.

In the U.S., yeah, folks buy games, but I know of at least two folks who bought a PS3, thought it played PS2 games (LOL) and have only bought Blu Rays. Even on highdefdigest.com, folks often talk about using the PS3 as a Blu Ray player only. And a lot of them are selling them for standalone Blu Ray players.

@ NeoRatt

Thanks for the stats ... you totally rock.

do you really beleive the 250,000 peopel that buy ps3's every month in the us, only buy it for blu ray? are you f***ing kidding me? have you seen software chartz? thats like saying everyone bought the ps2 as a dvd player, which is very very false.

FIXED for the kiddies on the site.

I didn't say all of the folks, but I'd guesstimate at least 30 percent of sales are from folks who want a cheap Blu Ray player and are moved into that direction. You doubt me? Go into Best Buy and ask for a Blu Ray player - the best one - and see where you end up. I can bet cash money they will take you to a PS3 pile.

The fact of the matter is - there's no denying the folks who buy a 360 are buying it for one reason. To game. Even the add-on gave the 360 HD playback, it was more of a distraction than a legit weapon to Blu Ray. Based on the handful of folks I have talked to, and we are talking about the folks were over 40, they said they wanted Blu Ray and the associates told them to buy a PS3.

The only real way to tell if the PS3 is really being bought as a console is to watch attach rates. It's just that simple.

PS3 is definitely the winner for 2008. In terms of hardware, maybe not as much. The software lineup is, to me anyway, a league ahead of the 360.

I'm going to answer the second question first since it's a shorter answer for me; PS3 will sell more.

As for the first question, it's a harder thing to decipher. 360 has over 20 games it's sharing with a PC release that aren't seeing the light of day on the PS3 this year. Some big titles like Splinter Cell Conviction, Alan Wake, Left 4 Dead, Supreme Commander and many others that really flesh out the 360 line-up even further than it already is. There are also the console exclusives like Gears of War 2, Halo Wars, Banjo-Kazooie 3, Ninja Gaiden II, Fable 2 and Too Human, and you can see this is going to be a hefty year, and surprisingly, a year filled with few exclusive FPSes and more rounded game selection.

The PS3 on the other hand, I don't think I even need to mention how vast the line-up is. Even with the departure of GT5, you still have a monster year ahead, with the possiblity of a new Naughty Dog project rearing it's head this fall.

Overall I think the PS3 will take it for quality, but not by much at all. If even one of these PS3 games ends up a critical flop, I can see the 360 take this year again with quality software.

Don't mention Supreme Commander. Just don't. It's one of my favorite games, and I fear how they'll butcher it to fit it in only 512 mb of ram.

How much ram is on the PS3? 1GB?  higher or lower?

Why don't you go and actually look at the attach rates then. They are the same for each console. The FOLKS are buying the PS3 for the games and Blu Ray.

I think it is:

360: 522

PS3: 512
